Yaaay. Another successful convert to the Potter series.
Really glad you enjoyed them U2, and really glad you managed to get through the last book without spoilers.
I think now you can see why Flac and I were so horrified at the suggestion that you would like the process better if you waited to watch all the movies before picking up the books. They're such dreadful, shallow imitations of the real thing.

Come on, guys. The movies aren't that bad. After all, Emma Watson is almost 18!

let me clarify: I don't read children's literature (even though I totally respect HP, it amusses me to see grown men so "hooked" by something largely meant for kids...but hey, its your thing), Heroes is one of my only two stop down shows every week...but I know exactly what it is: it is a cheap imitation of what comics gave me as a kid, I find one woman to be amazingly amazing, and Correy Meggette would have been an amazing addition to our beloved Mavs.
for the record I liked all the movies except for GOF...but am sure I would appreciate them less if I had read the books.

EXTREMELY. Third most powerful living wizard in this series in my opinion. Dumbledore first, voldy second, snape third, mad eye fourth then lupin sirius, lestrange and mcgonical(i have no clue how to spell that off hand) being somewhere next in the group.

by the way guys...
I tried reading some of book 2 today and instead of enjoying it.. it made me really sad for some reason. I think it's because I know how it all works out on the end. Maybe I just need to give it a couple years before I go back and read them all again.

Well Book 2, imo, is easily the worst book of the series, so maybe that was your problem.

Hmmm.....Thig might be right. Book 2 might be the worst.
But I have to disagree with DevinFuture there....HBP is definitely my second favorite.

HBP and PoA are tied for my second favorites.
The Chamber book is really not that good at all. For one it suffers from the lower reading level of the first book, but doesn't have all the cool stuff in the first book, where Harry discovers everything for the first time.
But for me, the book was the worst because of one of the central themes; Lockhart pulling the wool over Hermione's eyes, and her not seeing through him because she was enamored with him. Just ridiculous, in my opinion.
She is so out of character throughout most of that book is just drives me crazy.
BTW, I just finished reading through GoF again, and I had completely forgotten about the part at the end when Harry is telling Dumbledore about how Voldemort came back. He tells him about Wormtail taking Harry's blood, and Harry swears he can see, just for an instant, and look of triumph in Dumbledore's eyes. I thought that was cool. You have no clue what it means at that point, but cool to see after knowing the end.

DH
HBP
GOF
PoA
OOTP
PS
CoS
That is my list. Flaco has spoken.
And if you don't know what the abbreviations mean, you're not dorky enough for this conversation, and I can't help you.

In order of preference? That's gonna be hard. I'm reading through them again right now, although it wasn't that long ago that I read them for the first time. I'm on GOF. I still think that the cemetary scene is my absolute favorite in terms of tenseness, excitement, etc.... Although I think if I hadn't been spoiled about Dumbledore before actually reading HBP that might be different.... but on 2nd thought I had seen the movie GOF. But that movie sucked so that's not exactly the same thing as being spoiled about the death of Albus.
Anyway, I will try to list them in my order.... but that might change once I get to the end of GOF, depending on if it's just as good the 2nd time around.
GOF (because of the cemetary scene, and the realization that Voldemort was indeed back)
DH (for obvious reasons)
OOTP (not only the DOM scene but I was literally depressed the first half of that book. I thought that was a significant accomplishment on the part of Rowling)
HBP (oh if I weren't spoiled....)
POA (Harry gets a "family". I think the funniest part is Professor McGonagall talking to Trelawny at the Christmas dinner)
SS (I am reading this to my girls right now )
COS (although I enjoyed laughing at Lockhart. After reading it again though it made me wonder how one of Riddle's horcruxes would know about an event that happened AFTER that piece of his soul was ripped out? I don't know if she's explained that or not. I guess I'll have to assume that all the horcruxes know about it...)

Flac, you crack me up.
I'm glad that we're all in agreeance.
To U2's point, I do wonder what it would be like to read HBP knowing what happens. That moment is such a defining moment in the series. It happened so quickly, and I was just left speachless. Plus, in U2's case, he was able to just plunge right into DH. HBP was the first book I read anywhere close to its release date, and so was the first time I had to just stop and wait after reading. What a terrible place to have to experience that for the first time, just sitting around obcessing over Snape's motives, and various other things.

u2,
If I remember correctly, the diary-Riddle told Harry that he learned all about Harry from Ginny, who "told" him by writing in the diary.

You are probably right, that makes sense. That's easy to confirm too, all that occurs in the "heir of slytherin" chapter.

My list:
GOF
DH
POA / HBP (Tie - HBP would probably be #3 outright if I hadn't known the ending ahead of time)
OOTP
SS
COS
