JOLIET, Ill. -- NASCAR Busch Series driver Christian Elder suffered a concussion and possible broken right clavicle Friday in an accident during his qualifying lap at Chicagoland Speedway.


Elder, driving the No. 38 Great Clips Ford, was midway between Turns 3 and 4 on the 1.5-mile track when his car turned nose-first into the outside retaining wall.

Safety crews cut the roof from the car and lowered a backboard down into the cockpit. Once outside the car, Elder was loaded into an ambulance and taken directly to the infield care center, where he was examined by track medical director Wendy Marshall.


Following Marshall's examination, Elder was loaded into a waiting helicopter, where he was taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. He will undergo a CAT scan of the head and neck, and other x-rays.
