Memphis signs Smith to Offer Sheet
Sad day...
Quote:
The Memphis Grizzlies have signed restricted Atlanta free agent Josh Smith to a $58 million offer sheet, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting.
The Hawks now have seven days to match or let Smith walk, but have said in the past they'll match any offer the high flyer may get from rival teams.
Should the Griz land Smith he is expected to play power forward alongside Rudy Gay at small forward, O.J. Mayo at shooting guard and Mike Conley at point guard.

Well, at least this speeds things up, I'm tired of stupid Atlanta and their crappy treatment of their players. This could be even better, Atlanta can match and S&T Smith for something rather than getting nothing for him, ans since they are too cheap to pay for anyone who is any good, they may get something in return. At least there is a timetable to see what happens now.

So, are we the worst team in our division now?
(where did I put my razor blades...?)

What are the rules on matching an offer sheet as part of a sign-and-trade? Are the Mavs completely out of the Josh Smith race? Or were the Mavs never in the Josh Smith race in the first place?

58 mil seems low for Smith's talent, resume and potential.

Being signed to an offer sheet isn't a trade rumor but thanks for playing.

He's already signed so S&T is no longer an option. They could match and trade him later but why would they do that?
I've been suprised that so many people thought that there was a chance in hell we were getting Josh Smith. It almost never makes sense to trade a RFA to a team over the cap. (OT but I wouldn't be suprised if Ben Gordon is the first).

You completely missed his point...
Point being: no more talk about Josh Smith - what's the next trade rumor?
(but thanks for playing)

This news does nothing to end the SnT rumors. If anything it forces the issue for Atlanta and this needed to happen to even make Atlanta give up Smith. If no one offered Smith big money then they could have lowballed him without any need for a sign-and-trade. Now that Atlanta has a number in front of them and a clear time limit on how long they have to act, it gives Atlanta 3 options
1) let Smith go to Memphis for nothing
2) match Smith's offer and pay the 10million a year
3) SnT him-- only needing to get around 5million a year back because of BYE. Atlanta can shop the value around.

Sorry I'm just pissed about this and management.
Seems like nothin is gonna happen this summer.
I'd settle with signing Bonzi Wells at this point.

Good point Erica, I just wasn't sure if a S&T was still an option due to some type of rules or regulations. If it is still a possibility then the numbers seem to properly allign to allow a Howard for Smith and Claxton deal.
Not sure if they're interested but it's good to know there's still a chance.

They can't sign and trade him now that he has actually signed an offer sheet. They can either match or let him go. No other option.

As Thig and I pointed out, you can't sign a player who has already been signed. But even if you put that aside, If Smith signed for $12MM we'd have to send ~$12MM back to Atlanta.

nevermind it looks like matching the offer means accepting a new contract and that contract cannot have the "48 hour suicide pill" clause that allows a SnT.
Josh Smith is off the table for a sign and trade.

Yup, they're right, a S&T is now impossible, dammit.
Looks like we're stuck fellas, and that is extremely frustrating. After all the crap this team has been through the past 2 years, the organization is still convinced we are fielding a title contender. Now, our only hope is that Josh Howard stops being a complete idiot and some of the swingmen we acquired play well with Kidd serving it up for them. I certainly hope some sort of Stackhouse offer is on the table somewhere to pick up a shooting guard, but man this is annoying. We don't know the full details, so maybe Atlanta was asking way too much for Josh Smith.
Either way, this now makes me even angrier about the Artest sweepstakes. Obviously the Mavericks must have known the chances for Smith were slim to none. And apparently Rick Carlisle wanted Artest badly. What the hell happened? Did someone have a brain lapse? Is Donnie too busy in communist China trying to help out their Olympic chanes? The entire offseason it's like the front office is treating it like they have better things to occupy their time with. They aren't set out on improving this roster, and Mark Cuban is too busy with the Cubs to give a crap.

Atlanta matches. Nice of Memphis to step up and speed it a long though.
The Mavs must have another target in mind.

I don't think that a failure to make a move is in any way an endorsement of the team as it is. Teams always say they are happy with where they are-- you dont say you desperately need threes when you are playing go fish. NBA is the same way.
We honestly don't have much to give. We dont have trade exceptions, we didnt have the LLE, we dont have many draft picks and teams are weary to accept them because we perennially draft in the bottom 8.
Talentwise we have
Josh Howard-- who still has two years at 10 million for a guy that has lowered his trade value way below his talent
Stackhouse-- who is only valuable for his near-expiring 7million
Jones-- who is only good for his 2 million expiring
Kidd-- who is valuable, but not 21 million worth. His real trade value is his 21 million expiring.

I think the Mavs are happy with the team and have no plans via trades.

That's a lot of money to sign LeBron with (if he doesn't go to Europe...)

? Even if Memphis got Smith (which they won't) it would hardly make them a playoff contender this season.
So first to second-worst......
