Houston 147 in 2 overtimes! What a wild one; what a game!
Where to start. The teams set the NBA record with 28 3-pointers made
in the game. The previous record was 23 3s. Dallas' 156 points was
a team record. Kidd's 8 3s made broke the old record of 7 (by Derek
Harper and just tied by Lucious Harris on Saturday). Kidd became
the first Mav to have 3 triple doubles (Mark Aguirre had 2 - and in
different seasons). Houston scored 14 points in the last 35 seconds
of the 4th quarter. Dallas scored 13 points in the last minute of
the 1st overtime.
How about that Kidd! He had 38 points on 12-27 FG, 8-12 3-pointers,
and 6-10 FT, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and 3 steals in 49 minutes.
It was his 3rd triple-double in just 5 games and 7 days. His neck
started bothering him late in the game and he received treatment on
it right after the game.
Jamal Mashburn was the high scorer with 42 points, including 7 of the
14 points in the 2nd overtime. He shot 16-37 FG, 1-6 3-pointers,
and 9-16 FT and had 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals in 53
minutes.
Popeye Jones ripped down 21 rebounds including 9 offensive as Dallas
out-rebounded Houston 85-63.
George McCloud filled in nicely for the injured Lucious Harris (who
was filling in for the injured Jim Jackson) and had 25 points on
9-20 FG, 3-6 3-pointers, and 4-6 FT.
Lorenzo Williams had another fine game with 14 points on 6-8 FG and
2-2 FT (he made his free throws!) and 14 rebounds including 8
offensive in 53 minutes.
Tony Dumas had a nice game off the bench with 16 points including
3-5 3-pointers in 22 minutes.
Not to be lost in all of this, Clyde Drexler also had a triple-double.
He had 29 points on 8-24 FG, 1-7 3-pointers, and 12-12 FT, 11 rebounds,
11 assists, and 3 steals in 51 minutes.
As one of the mad bombers, Kenny Smith had 29 points on 9-16 FG, 5-10
3-pointers, and 6-8 FT and 6 assists.
Pete Chilcutt and Chucky Brown also had good games. Chilcutt had 22
points including 3-5 3-pointers and 11 rebounds. Brown had 19 points
and 14 rebounds, but also had 6 turnovers.
The loss was Houston's 5th straight home loss.
Quotes
Jason Kidd: "I've never been in a game like this before, and I hope it
will be my last. But it definitely feels good. My job is to win games
and I'll let my Rookie of the Year [credentials] and my triple-doubles
speak for themselves."
Kidd: "That was a long game. It always feels good to win a good game
like that. That's the way basketball is supposed to be played. Last
time we played down here, I started hot. This time, I just wanted to
make sure I saved myself for the second half. "
Kidd: "We lost a lot of close games earlier in the season. At the same
time, we learned from those games, learned the hard way and now it's
starting to pay dividends. We're starting to win the close games and
that's what it takes to be a playoff team."
Popeye Jones: "I've never been in a game like that. We did everything
we're supposed to do in the last minute of regulation. We hit our free
throws. We were in their faces when they were shooting the 3s, but
they were going in."
Dick Motta: "We still blow an eight-point lead, then they lose an
11-point lead with a minute to go. I've seen leads dissipate - never
like this. I've never seen anything like it."
Motta: "I've never seen anything quite like the performance both of
these teams put on."
Motta: "All season long, the Mavericks have been coming back like this.
But we're not foolhardy enough not to notice they were without Hakeem
and Maxwell and then Herrera bowed out at the end."
Clyde Drexler: "It was an up and down game. Sometimes you just fight
hard and lose. After battling back, we became careless with the ball
and that hurt us."
Rudy Tomjanovich: "It's by far the most bizarre game I've ever been
involved with. It was one of the best comebacks we've ever had and
then one of the worst finishes we could have had trying to close out the
game."

The race for 8th: With the win, Dallas (34-41) made up 1/2 a game on the
idle Denver Nuggets (36-39) and is now 2 games behind. Sacramento (36-39)
also beat the Clippers and are tied with the Nuggets for the 8th spot.
The magic number is still 5. Any combination of Denver wins [or Sacramento
wins] and Dallas losses totaling 5 means that the Mavs are eliminated from
playoff contention. The LA Lakers play in Sacramento tonight and Denver
plays in LA vs the Clippers and Dallas plays in Seattle Thursday night.
