I feel like I have less channels after this latest switch by Verizon... Maybe I'm only more aware of the channels I'm missing.

Sorry, I meant maybe I'm more aware of the extra channels that I haven't paid for. I think Verizon sprinkled those channels in between other channels instead of blocking them all together. Before, I could channel surf through 20-30 before hitting a black screen for example.

People still channel surf?
My dad does this..they have Directv...it drives me crazy. "JUST USE THE GUIDE!!!" and he says "I don't like the guide sometimes."

Yeah, that's a completely foreign concept to me. I rarely ever watch live tv at all, much less actually flip through channels.

Okay..... so I signed up for FiOS TV. I get it installed next Saturday. So that means I get to watch ALL the Mavs games right? Or do I have to get League Pass?
edit: and does fios tv have the butterfly channel so I can watch Stars playoff games, too?

You get to see all Mavs games. And yes, it does have Vs so you'll get to see all Stars playoffs games.

Thanks thig... I actually found the channel listing for my zip code and saw that Versus was on it. I appreciate the confirmation about the Mavs games.... I just seem to remember some people having it blacked out for whatever reason and wanted to avoid that.

Did you get a DVR? Or is this a "one step at a time" deal?
HD? You know you want it.

Well, actually if you have a DVR then you have at least some HD channels, I think. Probably just the locals if I remember the new plans correctly. But obviously that only matters with an HD tv.

Ah very good. Watching shows on your schedule, in an abbreviated time period is the best. Also if you're like me, instead of watching commercials during sporting events you can rewind to way over analyze things that just happened in a sports nerd kind of way.

I've been certified for close to a year now. So not sure where that comment comes into play here.
If it was a money comment then please know that the decision to not buy a HD screen isn't a money issue. It's a practical issue. We have a TV that works perfectly fine. We don't watch TV much at all to begin with. So to spend money on something we already have that won't be used any more than the one we already have doesn't make sense. I don't like to just throw money around like that, personally.
I suspect that our TV's days are numbered. We have had it for 10 years (almost). When it dies, then I will get a HDTV.

Yeah that's what happened when we got ours. We had a tv that her Dad gave us a while back, I don't know how old it was but the speakers on it were struggling mightily so much that we practically couldn't hear it.
Anyway... um. Go FiOS.
By the way, is anyone else having this problem...I keep seeing the info box appear all on it's own. I'll hit exit, and then a few seconds later the "info" box pops up again. It eventually stops. I'm not sure if it's a problem with my remote or my box.

That happens to me every once in a while. I think it happens when I'm buffered and catch up to live tv, but I'm not sure.
I usually power cycle the box and it goes away.

For what it's worth...if you are planning to buy an HDTV...for any reason, there is a GREAT time to find deals.
Our house has two HDTV's, one 58" Plasma 720P and one 42" Plasma 720P
Both were great deals that we purchased in August 2007 and November 2007. We spent months and months looking scouting and shopping prices. We jumped on our 58" and we saved huge cash at the time by going with the 720 over the 1080.
I understand the technical difference, but the jump from analog to the 720 was so huge that the 1080 was not worth the higher jump. Not to mention, we are still limited by the broadcasting as it stands.
Now on the 42"...we picked it up on "Black Friday"...you know the big shopping day after Thanksgiving.
Both Plasma's are Panasonic, and my in-law has a Vizio LCD 1080P...we have all enjoyed the 720 more than the Vizio. Be careful and make sure you invest in a quality brand. The Vizio has already had to be repaired at less than a year old...fortunately, we helped our in-law buy it through Costco and they have a great warranty plan that that took care of an in-house repair at NO COST to us.
Anyway, we picked up the 42" for $799 and it has been an awesome entertainment tool in our house.
So if you are thinking about picking up a TV...Black Friday is just around the corner, surf the internet for shopping deals, heck team up with someone and go to a few different stores early early early on Black Friday.
Last year, was the first year we ever shopped on Black Friday, heck I didn't know what it was...I always thought it was a crowded busy shopping day and that I wouldn't be caught dead on the road, let alone in a store....but dang we had a blast last year.
To beat it all, we were done shopping in time to go to breakfast.
Some stores open at 5:00 AM...you gotta do some prep work, hunting the Internet...but when you do and you find that deal, it can be well worth it. In many cases you can save well over 50%...but the trick in retail, is that they advertise these deals, but they have a limited quantity...sometimes only having ONE available.
It's set up to get people to come to their store.
Plan ahead, have fun shopping and enjoy the great new purchase thanks to the recent gas price stimulus!!!

My 2 cents... 1080 vs 720 .... not even close. But that's just me. You have to watch a lot of it before you can really start to appreciate the difference. But it is there.
And I would never leave my house the day after Thanksgiving, much less go to a place that sells things to humans.

Here's an interesting fact:
A Verizon remote breaks into exactly 6 pieces if you throw it at the ground hard enough. Like say, after the Stars lose, affirming that they are indeed the absolute WORST team in the NHL and will miss the playoffs for sure.

I put it back together shamefully. It works fine amazingly. Getting the big rubber piece with all the buttons back through the face plate was difficult. .

I just re-read through the post...I know I'm a bit slow...but hey, at least I keep going.
Anyway, I echo the comments about Verizon FIOS and the new channels. They sprinkled some coold channels into HD, but they haven't turned them on.
For example, I get CNN HD and I can see it, but FOX News HD tells me that I'm not subscribed to it.
There's a few others sprinkled in...Including VS HD...how do I get these turned on?
For what it's worth I refuse to get any of the movie stuff...but I would like to simply have the full HD Channel offering without the movie channels. I think I'm also stuck without WGN HD...it's rather weired, it's as if every other HD channel is not turned on.
Any tips from the experts out there?

You have to upgrade your plan to get those additional channels. You probably have the same thing I had which is the Premier package or whatever, but that doesn't exist any more. You've been grandfathered in at your old rate, and you should have gotten SOME new HD channels (like TBS HD) but not all of them. You have to change your plan to the Extreme HD plan, and it's about $10 more a month if you want it.
However, if you have a Verizon phone-land line then they may have a new bundle for phone/internet/tv that will not increase your rate...I'm not sure. I heard some people say they got the new plan with the new HD channels and their bill actually went down, but I don't have a land-line so I don't know.

Huh, I should look into that. I'm a Verizon whore. If they sold water, I'd be using them too.

They have a bundle for just tv and internet as well, and it's about 15 bucks cheaper a month than regular internet and the premeir plan, I believe.

I've got the Phone, Internet, TV...I just want the added HD Channels without it costing me an arm and a leg.

Got the NHL network added yesterday....and it's ruddy brilliant. 2.5 hours of live look-ins, highlights and analysis every night. Plus 3 or 4 games a week in HD.

So you upgraded to the Extreme HD then?
I'm probably doing that soon. I noticed on the last bit of info they sent out they listed the NBA TV (standard and HD) as "coming soon". I like that.

Yeah, once they dangled NHL Network in my face, along with the Versus HD and the ESPNEWS HD...I had to do it. And I gotta say it's worth it. I watch that stuff all the time, and already after one evenings viewing love the "NHL on the fly" program. There was so much sports going on at my house last night my wife was in a most foul mood

Just in case any of you FIOS guys don't read your messages, FIOS has made Remote DVR access available to all customers now. So now you can set recordings online.
Go to your message center for details.

That's awesome...
Message center? I don't know that I have a message center. When I log into the verizon web site it says I have no new messages.
edit: Ok, I found that web site and logged in...I guess they'll set it up now(?)

I meant the message center on your DVR, dummy.
And I dunno, that's as far as I've gotten as well. Waiting on them now.
