I love the match-up, for sure. It's basically the rubber match for our home-and-home from 2005 and 2006 where we each won in the other's house.

Check it out here. Some interesting votes were:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/graph...2008/flash.htm

Art Briles -- OU 1, Texas 5

Gene Chizik -- Texas 1, OU 2

Mack Brown -- Florida 1, Texas 2, OU 3

Mark Dantonio -- OU 1, Texas 5

Mike Leach -- OU 1, Texas 5

Howard Schnellenberger -- OU 2, Texas 4

Urban Meyer -- Texas 4, Florida 1

Also interesting were Rick Neuheisel and Mike Price (along with Todd Dodge and Gene Chizik) were the only coaches to put Texas #1, and the fact that Tommy Bowden still has a vote in the Coaches Poll despite no longer being a coach.

[UPDATE by 40AS]: Looking in some mini-BZ detail, 13 coaches in the top 25 had votes in the poll. Of those 13, 2 put their team exactly where the poll had them (Mike Bellotti and Mark Dantonio). 1 had his team below the poll spot (Frank Beamer, 5 spots lower). 5 had their teams 1 spot above their ranking (Mack, Urban Meyer, Gary Patterson, Mark Richt and Mike Reily). 3 were within 2 spots of their ranking (Jim Tressel, Kyle Whittingham and Chris Peterson). Mike Leach had Tech an astounding 6 spots above his final ranking and Gary Pinkel had Missouri a less shocking 5. For what it's worth, 6 of the 13 coaches with the most to gain/lose had OU 2 or more spots ahead of Texas.

------

Mack is so honest. I love that guy. But he is too nice.
i love mack but you gotta put ut number 1 if your the coach. he didnt have to rig his vote or anything im not saying leave florida off or anything. Id have put them 3 but oh well he voted how he felt he should. leach screwed ut over though.

also, tech got screwed more than anyone in this deal. Theres no excuse for osu going to a bcs game over tt. Osu has no business whatsover in a bcs game as an at large. I understand its about marketing but still. If UT shows up they win by 35.

That's very true. Although, the problem isn't the fact that tOSU got picked above Tech. The problem is the rule that says only 2 teams from any given conference can make a BCS game. That rule totally sucks in a year like this one where you've got 3 teams in one conference deserving of a BCS bid.

Any coach that put UT at #5 should have their voting privileges revoked. They should also face heavy, heavy fines as well.

One voter in the Harris poll voted UT #6. Had Florida, OU, Bama, USC, and freaking Utah ahead of us.

A lot. They are absurdly expensive right now, for whatever reason. Mine were like 400 each round trip.

Well..no surprise here imo..

Bradford won the Heisman...Colt finished 2nd and Tebow 3rd (despite getting the most 1st place votes).

Well Mike Leach..there was a reason why Graham Harrell wasn't invted to the ceremony...the top 3 had like 1500 points and Harrell had 200.

Exactly. I love how Leach was bitching about that. Why in the world do you want them to invite a guy that's going to be totally embarrassed when he loses by 1300 points to the other guys?

I'll give the Tech perspective on this.

The Heisman is an accolade for a player's accomplishments during the college football season. It's basically a celebration of the top performances/performers of that year in College Football. People like Nate Davis, Shannon Davis, etc on top of Harrell and Crabtree got votes. Sure they might not have come close to winning, but they got recognized with votes. How hard is it to send an additional 4-6 people? It's a celebration of the best players in college football. You may not win, but the experience of being in NY, being with those other guys and taking part of the history of the Heisman is an experience all onto itself.
Say in the Olympics, there are 2-3 elite runners...should we just tell everyone else, "Don't worry about showing up, you're not going to matter anyways." I think that's a major lack of respect. They all put in years of hard work and should be able to be on the same field with those competitors.

Tech already doesn't get the full respect it probably deserves. It's not a major powerhouse in football yet, but it's made nice leaps and bounds in the past few years. It beat the team that is very deserving of being in the BCS title game and it lost to the team that eventually got in to the game. By the end of bowl season, it won't matter what Tech did, because it doesn't have the pedigree yet of teams like Florida, Texas, UT, Alabama etc. etc. That'll make a very impressive season mostly forgotten...and that means what Crabtree and Harrell will get forgotten as well. The team itself already got screwed by the BCS rules and got left out of being on one of the major bowl games. There was a technicality/rule on that one...there wasn't one for the Heisman.

Murray to have surgery, miss BCS title game

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma Sooners running back DeMarco Murray will have surgery to repair a partial rupture of his left hamstring tendon and will not play in the FedEx BCS National Championship Game against the Florida Gators on Jan. 8.

Murray, the Sooners' second-leading rusher, was injured on the opening kickoff of the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 6. The Sooners initially believed Murray had suffered a bruise, but an MRI exam revealed the injury to be more serious. Surgery has been scheduled for Dec. 22, the university said.

The school said that according to head trainer Scott Anderson, it will be about five months before Murray is cleared to resume training.

Murray gained 1,002 yards rushing this season, just eight fewer than team rushing leader Chris Brown. He led the Sooners in all-purpose yards with 2,171, with 395 receiving yards and another 774 yards in kickoff returns, scoring 18 touchdowns.
How Will Injury
Affect Sooners?

The loss of DeMarco Murray will hurt Oklahoma in the FedEx BCS Championship Game against Florida. But not as much as you'd expect, writes ESPN.com's Tim Griffin. Blog.

"Obviously we're very disappointed for DeMarco," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "He has been an important part of our success this year and we will miss his contributions. DeMarco has had an incredible year. "

"With Chris Brown and Mossis Madu, we still have two very fine backs. Our team has a lot of confidence in their abilities."

------------------

DANG IT. I wanted OU to be at full strength when the Gators chomp them.

I don't know man, I think you might be underestimating the embarrassing aspect of being that far behind the other guys. They announce the placements and the vote totals at the end of the ceremony at the downtown athletic club, so you've got a guy like Harrell sitting there and it's being announced that he got 2 first places votes and ended up 1000 points behind the 3rd place guy.

These guys are competitors, they want to win. I'm not sure if Harrell would "feel good" about just getting to go to NYC and then getting his ass kicked.

This is just the way the DAC has always done it. They decide how many finalists to invite based on the vote totals. They only invited 3 guys in 2005 because Bush, Vince, and Leinart accounted for like 95% of the vote. Leach is acting like it was some sort of personal screw job, but if he has a problem, he should take it up with the voters who didn't give enough points to Crabs and Harrell.

The way you described it is the pessimistic way to take the trip to NYC for the Heisman, getting your ass kicked. Did it end up being realistic, yeah...but I can usually find a way to spin it to where you can see the positive out of the situation.

The positive way would be as I mentioned it originally...being there in NY and the ceremony, sharing in the experience and still being remembered as being one of the elite players in 2008.

I don't have a problem with what Leach did...he defended his guy, and I don't see what's wrong with that. But you're right, the voters didn't do give proper justice to a guy like Harrell. The voters and the DAC don't always get it right and I think this is a case where they screwed up again. Is it that hard to invite a few more people?

Harrell is gonna be remembered as a good player. Frankly, he'll likely be remembered as the best Tech QB ever. I don't think whether or not he was at the ceremony will change that, personally.

I'm not saying he didn't deserve to be there or anything, but Leach wasn't really going after the right people.

That'll be great for him in retrospect, but for now he'll be relatively forgotten. Being there or not being there probably won't change that overall outlook on him, like you said. I just know, if it were me, I know the chances of me winning might not be that great, but if I was in the conversation and had the numbers to back it up...I'd want to be there. It'd still be a special moment and one I'd never forget. Maybe that's the "glory days" part of my personality, but that's just the way it is for me. It'd be a great finishing note to your college career...as well as the last bowl game.

Tech just doesn't have that pedigree right now, they're definitely working on it and have made some good strides over the past couple of years. I think in the wide scope, Tech is still considered that "nice little whacky team in West Texas." I think that's where the off-targert bitching came from with Leach. When you're seen as that and not getting the credit you feel you deserve, you get a little pissed off, Leach just didn't aim that hateraid in the right place.

That's true. The problem Tech has to overcome, as far as an award like the Heisman, is voters know that the team's offensive stats are inflated some by the system. Hell, BJ Symons threw for way more yards than Harrell did--didn't he? I think he hit 6,000. He wasn't even in the discussion, though, because Tech lost 4 or 5 games that year.

Given that, I think the voters tend to "adjust" downward for Tech players, despite the gaudy stats. Mostly likely, the only way a Tech QB will ever overcome that is if the team is undefeated. I have no doubt in my mind that Harrell wins the Heisman in a landslide if Tech manages to beat OU. That's not necessarily a fair criterium, but that's how the award seems to work these days.

Yeah, I honestly think that's the only way they'll get the respect and get rid of the "system" stigma...they have an awesome one, but they've slowly developed more than just that. That seems pretty dumb that it's going to take an undefeated season to get rid of it...but I'm not even sure if that'll fully get rid of it, especially when it comes to Heisman candidates.

The OU defense definitely had Harrell's number that night and that definitely killed his momentum. Would it have been different if they lost in a close game and he still performed well? I don't know if it would've been enough, but it definitely would've made that a little more interesting.

I hope this game is close to the end. I don't need fans streaming out early and messing up my commute home at 4.

Our flight to Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl leaves in 11 hours. I'm hyped.

I really hate myself for not going to the game because of the expensive flight. I had tickets at face value .. lower bowl.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

OH WELL. GOOD FRACKING GAME.

This is what my friends and I ate.
350 nuggets. 6 supersize fries. 63 condiment packages. A pizza and some RAMEN.

Why was OSU invited to that bowl game? They were undisciplined, and unable to move the ball. I can't believe UT let them score that many points. You can't win without a real QB..and neither of those complete spares OSU was rolling out there is a real QB. The right team definitely won that game.

Who was the guy with the mullet, the jeans, and the UT jersey (complete with shoulder pads) on the sidelines they kept showing on tv, "hooting" and hollering? I felt he engendered the true meaning of being a football fan in texas.
