Default What's wrong with Dirk?

Any theories? It's been years since I remember having seen him have this many games that were this bad in a row.

This is not normal, not at all. And it's not like these defenders are doing anything new to him. They're just getting right up on him and double teaming. That's normal for Dirk.

He has a tendency to not tell anyone about any possible injuries because he prefers to fight through them. I could definitely see that as a possibility especially with Terry already out. However, I don't actually see him hobbling or struggling with any other kind of movement so I'm just grabbing at straws.

Here's a crazy theory: Dirk is human...

(we all have our slumps - better to play like crap for 4 games in a row in the regular season as opposed to the playoffs, no?)

Against the Spurs, I think their defense just through him off. I think that had they played him normal, his fadeaway would have been falling and he would have at least got 20. You saw that he was making shots in the 4th. He just couldn't get many quality shots off against that Spurs defense.

Kudos to the Spurs for running that defense. Dirk wasn't able to find the open man (1 assist...).

he struggles against good defense because he doesn't attack anymore...he fades away 90% of the time. he's got to put his head down and get to the line.... he needs to spread his game out too. more attacking and more threes. keep em guessing.. not the same shot from the same spot everytime...

I'm not going to give the man any excuses this time. If you can't get a bucket against Matt "Red Rocket" Bonner when your team needs a spark, you have to shoulder the blame. With that being said, here's to Dirk having an amazing 26 game stretch to end the regular season.

It's not like the Spurs haven't ever double teamed Dirk before. What the Spurs did wasn't anything new. I'll grant you that none of Dirk's teammates were doing him any favors by knocking down shots that would have helped open things up for him. But he still let himself get taken out of the game by Matt Bonner.

How about we discuss some of the BS calls going against him when he does try to be agressive. Oberto putting his face alomst in his armpit then when dirk turns to shot he has no choice but to brush against his face and oberto goes flying like he was just roundhoused. Our against Boston when Peirce puts his face in Dirks chest and Dirk bumps him on his release and gets an offensive foul. I think the refs need a class in the differences in a 7 ft player shooting and a 6 ft 6 player. The 7 ft is going to have his elbow and shoulder in places closer to the head.

Everyone has a bad call or two go against them. He needs to keep being aggressive. Refs can smell fear, and Dirk lets them bully him as if they were Bonners with stripes.

Several good posts in here. Just211 is right, he isn't mixing his game up very well. Random jags are taking him out of his game? That can't happen.

No more excuses for our superstar, just play. I don't believe there are any injuries, just too much highpost iso and the same old stuff. Weak defense, soft offense.

I do not understand why they have quit posting dirk up at all. Earlier in the year he was getting the ball off screens by coming across the lane and getting the ball in a postup. Now he's getting it tossed to him at the elbow. He get's aggressively doubled...but he's waiting for it instead of taking his man off the dribble immediately.

Every shot he took early was a bad one with folks right in his face. They've got to figure out a way to get him closer to the basket or better looks.

Yeah, that didn't make sense - the Mavs should have feasted in the paint last night...

If the Mavs have another first round exit, I would like for Cuban to trade him for upcoming picks, or promising young players. I would like to see Dirk be rewarded for his patience...He deserves to be on a good team. It would have to be in a form of a three way trade, where he would go to LA, Boston, Cleveland, etc.

Exactly, WTF... Isn't this completely obvious to everyone? I can't understand it. Is RC to blame or is Dirk just not doing what he should be?

Dirk's slowly falling into the individualistic game, by waiting to make a move. In a Kidd led offense there are 2 options, shoot or drive, don't allow the defense time to react and that is what Dirk is doing. If the double is coming find the open man.

Not just the defense, but Dirk and Carlisle's inability to adjust. Basketball 101, if they're guarding too close, take it to the rack!

Dirk has always been bad with the double team.
It's as if he has 'score mode' and 'pass out of the double team' mode. He just doesn't seem flexible enough to make that decision as the play unfolds, rather than before the play starts.

NO that makes no sense. You dont let Dirk get off like that. He is sucking just as bad as anyone on this team. Now if he played his ass off everynite and had a bad game here and there you can say that. But whats going on is diff.

Dirk needs more weapons around him. He is exposed without another efficient scorer like Jet on the floor. If Dirk was surrounded by efficient scorers in the other 4 positions, he wouldn't be exposed this bad. Even San Antonio has more weapons to run pick and rolls/pick and pops with: Mason/Parker/Ginobili/Duncan/Thomas/Bonner/Hill. The Mavericks only have: Dirk/Jet/JHo/Barea/Bass. Duncan is great, but he does have lots of other options to work with.

Huh? I can't say he's coasting because he's playing badly? "Now if he played his ass off everynite and had a bad game here and there you can say that." So, if he was playing his ass off, then I could say that he was coasting... In other words, if he was trying hard, then I could say that he wasn't trying hard?

Dirk doesn't shoot 3s any more, why?

Because our center is a crap.

Dirk is not Kobe Bryant that can shoot 3s with the defender's hands on his eyes, and Dirk can't make drive jumpers like those smallers do. our opponent center always give Dampier and double Dirk up, because Dampier is widely known as a crap.
