We can't be that bad... What happened with the ball movement? Defense? Terry's, Jose's form? Roddy playing like crap, his confidence is shot, Haywood can't make free throws, our backcourt defense (and Peja's) kills us on every key possession. Right now, we're not a playoff team. I can't even recognize them. It's just sad.

The tank is on.
Don't compare us to the current Lakers until we have five rings.

Easy answer. This is a team full of streaky, inconsistent jumpshooters. You can't rely on guys like Jason Terry to do the heavy lifting for an entire season, because for every hot-streak there is an equally long cold-streak that immediately follows it. The Mavs roster can be divided into two categories; guys like Terry who are terrific scorers for half a season and then god-awful for the other half, and then the guys who just never score ever like Kidd and Stevenson. Then there's Dirk who's still a terrific player but clearly sometimes just coasts through games in the regular season (and god knows I don't blame him.)

What a worthless bunch of scrubs. Before anyone ever tries to point the figure at why the Mavs suck, just stop and look at their backcourt. That's it.

right now NO is tied with Portland at 45-33, and sitting in the 6th spot. their remaining schedule is the suns, grizzlies, jazz, and mavs. obviously we'll tank that last game. i could see them finishing 4-0.
of course them getting the 6 seed does us no good if the thunder pass us, which looks pretty likely

Is this a Mavs strategy right now? Fight for 4th place, because better meet SAS than LAL in 2nd round? Better match-ups against SAS, than against LAL, but IMO that doesn't change anything. Without healthy Butler and Chandler playing like in November/December we won't beat Spurs at their home.

So Japan got hit by a 9.0 earthquake, then there was a massive tsunami, then the Fukushima nuclear reactor melts down, and now they just got hit with 7.6 earthquake.
That's definitely worse than being a Mavs fan these days, but I can relate...

Isn't it funny that all these years we've always had problems with our big men, and now that we've finally got a good big man we've got guard problems?
Although we shouldn't have them as bad, how Rick got away with running a 3 guard line-up 2 years in a row after the playoffs last year clearly exposed it's flaws is beyond me.

OKC is a team full of young, athletic players. OKC vs Denver could easily go to 7 games. Both teams are very similar, and play similar styles. I haven't seen anything from the Mavs as of late that indicates we can beat the Nuggets. If people want to tell themselves we can beat them that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But personally, I can see why Karl would want us over the Thunder. This should give the Mavs fire to go out and prove their doubters wrong, but I don't think they have it in them. And it's not even just a case of playing hard these days, they really just don't have the talent aside from Dirk.

Nuggets' Karl wants Mavs in playoffs
If the Western Conference works out the way the Denver Nuggets want, they'll open the playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks.
After losing to the Nuggets on Wednesday night, the Mavericks are only one game ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the third seed in the West with four regular season games remaining. As a division champion, the Thunder would have the tiebreaker despite losing the season series to Dallas.
Nuggets head coach George Karl says he would prefer to face the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs.
"If we had to pick and choose on it, we would probably say 55 percent Dallas, 45 percent Oklahoma City, only because Oklahoma City is athletic like we are and they have two great players," Denver coach George Karl told Ian Fitzsimmons of ESPN 103.3 FM's Galloway and Company, referring to Thunder forward Kevin Durant and point guard Russell Westbrook. "They have two All-Stars who are really in their prime and have never won on the playoff stage. I just think right now our speed might have more effect against Dallas than it will against Oklahoma City."
The Mavericks, who have lost their last four games and are 8-9 since a 21-1 run, are slumping as the postseason approaches. Dallas has lost its last nine games against West playoff teams.
"I personally like to be in a better mode of winning more games than probably Dallas," Karl said. "I like winning to be your partner going into the playoffs. Some coaches don't, but I personally think you don't have to win every game, but you want to be at least in a winning mode.
"I will give the benefit of the doubt that the Mavericks are a veteran, older team that understands the playoffs. I think they'll be energized for the playoffs."
Karl, who mentioned that the Nuggets would have the "luxury" to double-team off of Shawn Marion, believes that the Mavericks are a less difficult team to defend than the Thunder because Dallas is a single-dimensional offensive threat. Led by sweet-shooting power forward Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks rank 28th in the league in points in the paint and 26th in the league in free throws attempted.
More on the Mavericks
News, notes and analysis of the Mavericks from ESPNDallas.com's Jeff Caplan, Tim MacMahon and our team. Blog
"In a lot of ways, I think their strength is their weakness," Karl said. "Their strength is they have tremendous ability to score by making jump shots. They are the best jump shooting team in the NBA by far. [Coach Rick] Carlisle is a very good offensive guy in getting good shots and tricking teams into open shots. They're very unselfish in finding the open man and getting open jump shots.
"In some sense, the jump shot doesn't go in as much as scoring in the paint. The two things I would say is I wish Dallas would score more in the paint and get to the free throw line more."

I can't disagree that Denver's speed would stack up better against the Mavs than the Thunder, since OKC has the speed to match.
This isn't a slight, it's a fact.

I see the reasoning, too. To put it out there is straight-up un-necessary and disrespectful.
I hope the Mavs get an earful of this from the Nuggets, the Blazers, the Hornets and everybody else. And I hope their response is to man it up and regulate on some fools.

The speed comments are fine, but stuff like "OKC has two great players" (implying that Dallas only has one) and "We can double off Marion" are slights IMO.

Who's our second great player?
Durant and Westbrook both represented OKC in the All-Star game, Dallas only had Dirk.

I don't disagree with the truth of the statement whatsoever, but it's still a slight. When Jason Terry comes out and says, "Minnesota is an awful team," it's obviously true, but it's still a slight.

And this. What a strange way to put it. "I wish"? Surely he really means, "I'm glad they don't do those things because that's exactly why I think they will be easier to beat"?

Respect is given where respect is due.
5-5 in our last 10 isn't scaring anybody - Karl smells blood and he's pouncing.

Yeah, but I'm not saying he should be "giving us respect." Just say nothing. Coaches are very, very well-versed in how to give non-answers. He chose to insult the Mavs instead. I hope they see it.

I hope they see it too.
You can be mad a Karl for saying, "I wish Dallas would score more in the paint and get to the free throw line more," or you can be mad at the Mavs for actually making that statement relevant.
Can't blame the guy for trying to break our spirits now, seeing as how we're likely to meet in the playoffs. It's up to the Mavs to nut-up and punch those words down his throat - I just hope Terry doesn't have the lack of sense to reply to this publicly...

Knowing how Terry is there's a 90% he will say something and don't leave out Cuban because he could say something also.

Well, he's right. Look, the Mavs don't really ever pass the ball that much to the centers. Both of the centers can catch the ball and find the basket with it. Has RC ever thought of maybe working the centers into the offense just a little bit more? That would provide scoring help(in the paint, no less).
The Nuggets will probably use the same method they used a couple of years ago-let Dirk go off and cover the other players-because as good as he is, he can't outscore the Nuggets alone.
Or they could switch it-cover Dirk, and just dare the others to go off. Overall, the other players have been erratic. Marion would probably do well, but aside from that-I'm doubtful.
But I do look forward to Terry's forthcoming comments on the Nuggets. It'll probably be about how they don't play defense or aren't a championship team-something that will serve as fodder for the Nuggets and will only make Terry look like a major ass after everything is said and done.

Yeah, I don't know if I buy the two efficient points as a long jumpshoot is as good as two efficient points from inside the paint story.
There's the foul game. There's also the open up the floor for your teammates game. The move the ball game. There's the who's the aggressor game. The physicality game. The consistency game (sure, you can have roughly equal efficient means from 5' and from 19' but are the standard deviations the same?). The defend-able game.
