Stevenson was amazing tonight: 5-7 from downtown (2-2 FT) for 17 points and 4 assists.

Butler should also get props: 4-5 from downtown with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Great game from both of those guys...

reDIRKulous

When Dirk Nowitzki hits another one of his impossible fade-away-jumpshots, it's just reDIRKulous how good he is !

I'm too tired to "work" right now and go through the audio but Cuban basically followed Carlisle's words in regards to the team not worrying about the streak, just focusing on getting better from a game-to-game basis. I'll have that up on the site in the next day or so.

Cuban can see this team is very strong, especially when all or most of the pieces are rolling. You can easily look at Kidd and Barea's shooting woes and say that's an issue...those kinds of issues were HUGE over previous years because the depth wasn't there. Now, you've got Stevenson, Butler and Marion all playing effectively and it really negates those spots needing improvement.

They're looking for the 48 minute stretches now, not power surges.

I love the game tonight. Seats for soldiers makes me feel good and happy. Even the big wood put his hand over his heart during the national anthem, maybe the first I've seen of him doing that this year.

The team really clamped down on them late..the dirk/jet show we've seen awhile. I would have liked to have seen caron get a touch or two in that quarter..just to keep the D a little more honest...but daaaaammmmmnnnnn...that german dude was really good tonight...Hard to not keep giving to him and D-Steve.

What an exciting game, would have been a shame to lose it. I mean, it was like starting a game with a 25 points advantage... We almost blew it, but Dirk and JET came to the rescue. How about Butler? He's "good Butler" for about 7-8 straight games now, i believe shooting almost (if not) in every one them 50+ percent from the field. He's embracing that second scoring option role.

Wouldn't have been necessary if he hadn't been such a liability previously. He stepped on the floor turned the ball over three times and got three fouls and handed the Jazz 10 points. Terry needs to go.

He also saluted the soldiers each time he scored.

It looked like the Mavs really wanted to put on a show for those guys - isn't there a certain amount of money donated to veterans for each 3-pointer made, or am I thinking of a different charity? (because we made 14 of 'em!)

I can only think of Gilda's club and Jet when he makes 3s. I'm not sure if he's still doing that or not.

All of the people I talked to: Dirk, Jet, Cuban, Carlisle, Stevenson, Novak, etc...they all lit up when the soldiers were mentioned. They really feel a stronger vibe in the arena and really take their energy up a notch on those nights.

One of the Jazz fans think Butler is the Mavs second best player... and Marion is awful.

Kind of weird considering this year it is the complete opposite (although Butler has played well lately).

Btw, why did they draft Haywood? I know he's white and all, but surely they could have gotten someone better than that.

Then if that is the case, Cuban and Mav fans need to bring a group of soldier's back for every playoff game. I'm sure they won't mind giving up their seats if it means they get to see the parade at the end of June.

It was definitely a weird selection on draft night. Kidd was guarding him and it just seemed like Gordon got a quick hook during the first quarter scoring blitz. I think the Jazz just felt they had a need at SF and it was either take him or drop down to get one and they didn't find an adequate trade so they were content to take him.

“It would have been nice a little earlier,” Nowitzki said, “but sometimes you’ve got to wait on him a little bit.”

I´ve never heard a better definition of how Jet plays the game...

...but...hey...at the end of the day, we all love this guy.

Funny quote from DeShawn after the game:

Quote:
About Jason Terry, who was on the floor to end the game even though he was having a bad night up until then...

“I think that’s the right move by far. Even if I had it going -- no disrespect to myself or anybody -- that’s the right move.” - DeShawn Stevenson
I like a player who has a sense of irony and self-deprecation. More importantly, it's just another example of the kind of team spirit we have right now.

You can't just go around trading the guy who is currently the second best offensive player on an offensively deprived team. I realize that Terry had a bad night overall and still has his weaknesses, but let's not make any irrational decisions here. Terry's currently a very important player on this team.

True. It's surprising that there are still people who question Jet's importance, even though that was a rather popular point of view after last season's playoff loss against the Spurs.

Getting rid of Jet doesn't make sense at the moment. What we need to do is reduce our dependency on his offensive game. That's why we need Butler to play like he did the last couple of games and want Roddy back as soon as possible. We don't have a true second option behind Dirk, so it's best to have three somewhat-second options and hope that two of them are ready to contribute every game.

Even though Roddy isn't availabe yet, we've already made an important step as far as being less dependent on Jet is concerned by adding Chandler and thus being a much better defensive team. When your defense gets better, your offensive production is less important. Chances are that we're much more likely to survive horrible shooting nights from Jet this year than last year thanks to our defense.

So Marion, Barea and Haywood all have horrible +/- stats. I know those stats can be deceptive, but when the players that get the majority of the bench minutes are -15, -13 and -10 respectively, then that's a problem. The bench is giving up almost all of the lead the starters are giving them on a fairly consistent basis.

Look at teams like the Spurs and Lakers. Just about all of their rotation players have positive plus/minus numbers. Our depth is a myth.

they all have negative plus/minus stats for the season (with the exception of JET), so they're giving up leads, and they're usually playing against other team's 2nd unit.

Mavs defense took a slight decline since winning big in Utah?

Last 4 (Season Average)
PA: 97.3 (92.5)
OFG%: 45.2 (43.2)
Defensive Efficiency (bballref): 105.5 (101.9)
4QPA: 24.5 (22.3)
4QOFG%: 47.4% (under 43%?)

Far away from sliding into old habits, but still worth monitoring.

You're so right. We should totally get rid of our bench players and trade them for some other team's bench players. Like, you know, if there were some team with a bench who could, you know, spot the illness-depleted starting unit a center and still compile a combined on-court +/- of +43 against the Warriors. Or maybe if there was a team whose 6th-9th guys could combine for a +48 on the road against a Jazz team that owed much of their success to a second unit that had been blitzing quality teams for comeback wins all season.

Man I wish we had a bench that could do that.

I've been noticing that as well. Team seems to be in mid-season coasting form in some respects. The offense is coming a little too easy for them.

You can if you are yacking on a message board with no responsibilty.

Part of that in my eyes is they give up way too many AND1s, certainly in the last 2 games. Also, but thats a personal opinion since the stats don't quite show it, they go weak on the glass down the stretch.

Obviously they've had some games where they've done well, but for most of the season they've struggled to sustain leads. I think it's especially disappointing when you consider Haywood and Marion have been productive starters in this league, so you'd think the bench would actually build leads more times than not.

I'm not saying they should trade the team 'cause I like some of the bench guys, but i do think it's a problem Carlisle needs to address.
