Not to belittle the game six performance against Portland, it's only a game one after all, but... most enjoyable playoff win since...when? Game six against Suns in Phoenix, 2006? Is that a bit much? Maybe, but it's the Lakers for Pete's sake
|
Best game since the "closeout on Phx in Game 6 (thinking the Mavs would go to the Finals(!)), or Dirk's 50.

yep. i'm positive that without brewer, we lose this game.

If every game in this series came down to Kobe shooting a three with 2 seconds left, we win in five.

Sporadic thoughts before I go to bed:
Way too good of a look for Kobe at the end there, but then again, that's why Phil is so great. If it had been a 3 point lead, I'd be straight pissed if Kobe got that 3 pointer. With a two point lead, I'm annoyed, because its freaking Kobe. But with just two points needed everyone had to be accounted for at all places on the court, so I know why it happened and am relieved.
I'm puzzled why Kidd guards Bryant over Marion. Well, somewhat. Kidd has those quick hands and probably a better reputation than Marion, so he can get away with more of that contact and the hands wrapped around Kobe's waist. Marion clearly can contest shots better, and did in the game, but clearly Kidd worked out. Still haven't fully made up my mind that one.
That first Dirk free throw almost rolled out. Dang.
Corey Brewer...the thing that I keep forgetting and then being reminded of when I see him play is his ability to set up his teammates. Late in the shot clock, he had a drive, but then got a bounce pass in to Chandler right on the money for a dunk. I don't want him initiating an offense anytime soon, but he had create a little offense from time to time.
Interesting question posed now: Stevenson played terrible, and Brewer played great. If Stevenson came off the bench, I think it'd be easy to flip out their minutes, but do you want to disrupt the starting lineup by plugging Brewer, who's still new to the Mavericks? Hmm. I'd be surprised if Stevenson wasn't starting Wednesday, but it'll be a lot more interesting if it happens again.
I thought the Mavericks, especially Dirk, got the short end of the refereeing stick for 46 minutes of that game. Last two were decidedly in the Mavericks favor, though, so it evens out...kinda. They definitely allowed a lot of contact for most of the game and scaled back on what they called late (other than Kidd guarding Kobe), and the Mavs were just more physical towards the end.

We allowed 16 points in the 4th quarter.
Defense wins again...

Also much props to Carlisle for that call out of the timeout where Peja curled for the open rainbow jumper. JJ was patient and let the play develop. Bridged the gap between the weird Peja,JJb,Jet lineup and getting Kidd/Dirk back in.

Just imagine this series with Butler and Roddy being all year healthy. The Lakers have even bigger issues than us against the ultrafast guards.
And Kidd has to take better care of the ball....
Brewer with a great spark. RC knows now he can throw him easily in the game. I give Stevenson another start next game but if he sucks sub him qucik out.

I know Kobe is arguably the greatest player in the league right now, blah blah blah, but seriously, if EVERYONE knows that he's going to take virtually every shot down the stretch, doesn't he realize that he becomes easier to defend? Or is he just that arrogant?

I didn't think he man defense was that great on Kobe (wasn't that bad either, but still several steps below the "elite defender" level Marion's was at). And yes, its SSS against a player who was hitting shots, so I'm not judging too harshly. His hands were all over the place, though. Only one steal, but it seems like he made some sort of deflection three or four times.

I think you are judging too harshly. The dood jumps off the bench and played extremely well in a tough position. "Hey, guy..I know you have hardly played lately but, Kobe is going off get in there and do something."
At least Dirk gave him his due in postgame w/ Cheryl.

Yeah, his man D on Kobe isn't near Marion's level. But it still looked better than DeShawn...and of course he brings more in every other aspect.

I heartily disagree with giving Haywood more credit than Tyson. Haywood played 13 minutes and somehow didn't grab a rebound. I thought he played solid, especially defensively, but Tyson was huge.
Now, the caveat to that is that Tyson was huge while being allowed to play extremely physical. He's rarely (never?) allowed to play like that. But for tonight I thought he was extremely important to this team.
Kidd was absolute garbage in the third quarter, and was mediocre to bad overall, but gosh was his defense huge in the fourth quarter. I have always loved how physical Kidd plays defense late in quarters when the team has fouls to give. Most guards just take wild chances and then reach, while Kidd just physically abuses his guy and pushes to see how much he can get away with.
Dirk...oh how I loved this performance. Gritty, determined, awesome. He rebounded at an elite level, he defended (not great against Odom, that's a rough match up), and he was so versatile offensively. He'll shoot more free throws when the refs start calling it tighter, too.
Brewer provided such a huge spark tonight. I really wonder what Rick decides to do next game. A small part of me doesn't want to change the lineup at this point, but Stevenson was not good at all in the first round, and he was awful tonight. Brewer just provides so much more in the less-obvious areas. He moves with a purpose without the ball, he moves the ball well, and he brings such a different level of energy. I think he has to start Wednesday.
Jet played such a solid game. I loved that shot selection, I loved the defensive play at the end of the game. Take out that RIDICULOUS foul at the end of the first half and I'm pleased as punch.
JJ had a solid game and Peja hit a few important shots tonight. Marion played awful offensively all night, but his defense is SO important against Kobe and Odom. I don't know that I agree that he'll be crap offensively the rest of the series. He had two really nice offensive games against the Lakers this season. I'll just settle for less fumbling of the ball.
Tonight was just freaking awesome. So intense, so agonizing in parts, and gosh that last three looked like it was going in. I loved every minute of it. Can't wait for Wednesday.

I think that stat is very deceptive. Chandler had the disavantage of playing on the floor with Stevenson. He also was on the floor when Kidd was playing bone head ball. When the subs came in is when the Mavs started playing better as a team and that had less to do with Haywood than it did with the players on the floor with him basically the guard play who did not turn it over like the starters did. All in all until the end of the game Kidd had a very bad ball control game. If you looked at the plus minus at on point in the game Dirk had the best +- at - 2. the rest of the starters were at about -11. Chandler always plays with the starters.
As to Brewer at least he was challenging Kobe's shots and was not allowing him totally open 3pt looks as some of the other mav defenders were early on. I thought pulling out Stevenson and replacing him with Brewer was a key move. I sort of hope they put him on the inactive. He has totally been worthless recently especially on defense.

It's called boxing out. A number of times Haywood did a fantastic job of boxing Bynum out, allowing other players to get boards. That was painfully obvious. Wow, pretty weird you missed that.
Marion played awful offensively all night, but his defense is SO important against Kobe and Odom. I don't know that I agree that he'll be crap offensively the rest of the series. He had two really nice offensive games against the Lakers this season. I'll just settle for less fumbling of the ball.
Marion didn't guard Odom well at all. Odom has always given him fits in the playoffs. Marion is much better when he has the length advantage rather than vis-versa.
Agree with pretty much the rest.
