I'm 99% sure Cardinal is on a vet minimum contract. Teams over the cap can sign vet minimum guys without using any exceptions.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Mavs have their MLE and BAE to use.

1.3 million, prorated.

Ummm no. The final year of his contract is paying him $15.6 (I think) mil this season, so no he's not going to ask for 2.

Players would definitely consider it for a team that looks locked to make it to the finals. Especially if they are on the tail end of their career.

Veteran minimum depends on the number of years in the league. For Peja (as it is with Cardinal), he'd get a pro-rated $1,352,181, which would be $676k in addition to whatever he got for his 15.4million dollar contract.

the prorated MLE would be about 2.88mill-- four times larger than what he'd get for the vet min.

no matter what, Peja isnt going to starve, particularly if he picks up 80%+ of his salary from his current contract. If he's still looking for a few more mill, we would be his best bet, and we could certainly get him a bit more in playoff pay and get him some burn to get another contract next year if he wants to continue playing.

Will he accept vet min? Is he already planning to go back to Nawlins? Who knows, but if its about money and he only wants Mavs, Hornets or Lakers, we could make it as financially worth his while as any of those teams. He could squeeze an extra 2million out of the NBA before retiring or he could use it as a springboard for another contract next year. Either way, we have the money and the stage for him if those are what are motivating him.

Will he provide more than Novak? That has yet to be seen, but the guy is shooting 48% from three this year and is a career 40% shooter.

Peja asking for $2M is a complete steal. I'm not saying he's going to ask for $10M either, just a tad more than $2M.

Nobody he'd be looking to sign with has cap space, so it can't go any higher than the MLE.. which is around $6M (without looking it up). Pro-rated with half a year remaining means he's only going to earn $3M max for the rest of this season. And nobody's going to sign him for more than this year (or, in a stretch, maybe some sort of option w/buy-out for next year if there's a mini bidding war).

I was thinking he would be asking for something in the $5M range so that would be some of the MLE, no?

Does the MLE count against the luxury tax?

All signings count against both the cap and the eventual tax (if you qualify).

Steve Blake took $4M of LA's MLE this year. Just need to figure out if Matt Barnes' $1.7M was MLE money or BAE money. So LA either has a small slice of MLE left or damn near none of it.

Either way, with DAL and NO not having used any MLE, they have considerably more to offer than LA in terms of money this season.

Yep. MLE this year is $5.77... exactly the sum of Barnes' and Blake's initial salaries. And no BAE.. NO and DAL are on equal ground here.

Vet minimum-- $676,000
Bi-annual-- 1,090,000
MLE-- 2,880,00

NO and DAL can offer the MLE, Lakers can offer the BAE.

LA seems like a better fit though because they are better at collapsing a defense and leaving him wide open.

Shamsports says the Lakers used their BAE last year to sign Shannon Brown.

Yes it does. I can't see him seeking the MLE. Probably the vet minimum or a bit more to at least make up the money he left on the table on his buyout.

IMO, Peja is somewhat of a mini-Dirk anyway. Sweet touch, avg D (although Dirk has improved dramatically at D, so I really shouldn't compare the D). I can see Peja doing many of the things Dirk does when he is on the court. In fact, I am not sure there is another BIG that compares to the game that Dirk has any better - maybe Gallinari, maybe Yi, maybe Rashard Lewis. Being 6'10" or taller and having that kind of range though is crazy.
No, just no. Peja is NOTHING like Dirk. Peja is strictly a spot-up and catch and shoot three point shooter. He's an uber Radmonavich.

Gallo, Yi and Lewis are nothing like Dirk either. The closest guy to Dirk is Bargs this year because he actually plays in the mid-post and drives, gets to the line. Of course he isn't 1/3rd the player Dirk is.

I'd love Peja here. He would be great to spread the floor when teams are doubleteamming Dirk. He'd easily be our best pure three-point shooter.

Triano up in Toronto is whining about Andrea and DeRozan's defense.

I can't remember who said it, I think it was LDub...it's definitely a shrewd move.

Not necessarily in the vain of Matt Barnes to LA (oh yeah, he missed the game last night), but it definitely has a nice potential pay-off.

The roster got thin for a stretch and can potentially get a boost within a 2-3 week period and new faces could still be on the horizon.

Well yeah, he's defense sucks. What's your point?

So does Yi, Gallo's, Lewis' and Peja's. But Bargs is much much much more similar to Dirk than those guys.

I guess I'll just have to agree to disagree with your opinion.

I think they all have shades of some of the skill-set that Dirk has and are all like him in many ways (not all ways, but each has some).

I will admit to forgetting about Bargs though, until it was brought up in the next post.

UPDATE FROM STEIN

Mavs have secured verbal commitment from Peja Stojakovic that he's signing with Dallas once he clears waivers.

At worst, he is a Cardinal replacement.

Not sure what better talent you can get with MLE anyways. He brings offense, adds depth to the forward spot and we don't want him going to a Western rival. Sell the f out for him.

Mavs FO for the win.

The Ajinca showcase makes sense now.

Sources say Mavs also close to separate trade w/TOR to send reserve center Alexis Ajinca to Raps for draft itemsf. All explained in story

Dammit Predrag. You better start draining those gayass, off-balance, hand-in-your-face threes for us.

It's going to be weird to root for Peja.

You could have got a 2nd rounder for him with just him being 7ft without the showcase

Part of me is still going to reflexively cringe when I hear "Stojakovic for three...!"

We'll see what the terms are but it seems like a bit of a timely coincidence. Could've moved him at anytime since July..

Sweetness. How long does it take for the waivers to clear?

More from stein

Ajinca, meanwhile, will be dealt to the Raptors along with a 2013 second-round pick that Toronto had sent to Dallas in last year's draft in exchange for the rights to rookie center Solomon Alabi and cash considerations. In return, Dallas will receive the rights to 2007 second-round pick Georgios Printezis (who plays in Spain and is no longer considered an NBA prospect) and create a salary-cap exception equal to Ajinca's $1.5 million salary.
