Martin seeking six-year, $87 million deal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Kenyon Martin once wanted a contract extension from the New Jersey Nets.

Now he just wants out.

Martin has broken off contract talks with the Nets and has asked for a trade, reports ESPN.com's David Aldridge.

Martin, who has one year remaining on his Nets contract, reportedly was seeking a six-year extension worth approximately $87 million, but Aldridge reports the Nets have offered him roughly $66 million.

Martin is not eligible for a new contract until July 2004. He is scheduled to make $5.1 million this season.

Martin produced the best numbers of his three-year career last season, averaging 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He increased his averages to 18.9 points and 9.4 rebounds during the playoffs when the Nets reached the NBA Finals for a second consecutive season.

I am willing to give up anyone not named Dirk for this Kid. He is what we need defensively.

What happened to all the craps Martin talking about last season where he would never leave if Kidd stay? I guess it's all about the Benjamin then.

We need to find a way to get him. He would be the perfect fit for this team, both offensively and defensively. Anyone but Dirk is fair game.

He IS from Dallas after all...but, as a previous ESPN article suggests, that's a lot of money for him compared to his numbers.

But I would LOVE to have him for something sensible...I just don't give up the entire farm for Kmart.

i wasn't a big fan of KMart until he started raising his rebounding average last season..

now, i'd definitely take him

For some reason earlier in his career, it appeared that he had learned how to rebound from watching tapes of eddie najera and raef lafrentz. But, I think he's over that now

But is he 87 MIL dollar guy? I doubt it! Infact, i think he is not. If he comes this year to dallas, he will earn 5 MIL but next year he will ask for 87 MIL. WE cant offer him that money. IN the mean time we will loose good players from our roster if we resign him.

RIght now to do any trade we can only just send AJ to them. but later we need to sacrifice some stars from our team to resign, unless he is just a year deal. I think Nets would try to get Rasheed instead. Atleast they will get something bigger in return and with expiring contract.`

I think K-mart just wants out of the media spotlight after having laid that big playoff egg against the Spurs.

Whoa. He is no $87 million dollar player and with that contract if he wasn't to perform well we would be stuck with a role player and giving him $87 mill for 7 years. Thats crazy.

I do not care if he is a 87 mil guy. His #s are same a finleys and are way better than Raef. We are already over salary cap. Get this guy. He is young and is mean. Much better than even Brad Miller who was overpaid too.

He is better than any of the aquisitions made by Lakers, Spurs, Kings viz

Rasho
Miller
Malone.

Would you people do a Nash for Martin? I think I would. Martin turns 26 in December. Martin and Dirk each just now reaching their peak.
 • PG Steve Nash (17.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 7.3 apg in 33.1 minutes)
 • PF Kenyon Martin (16.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.4 apg in 34.1 minutes
I love ya Nash but ya gotta go.

You have to think about your future. If Kenyon doesn't pann out what do the Mavs do then? They can't trade him just like the Pacers can't trade Croshere. His numbers are the same as Fin's? Fin is a shooting guard. I hope his stats aren't the same as Fin's. You can be over the cap but don't dig yourself in a hole with your capspace. We can't have every player on this team in a max contract. We will end up like the Heat, Blazers and Knicks.

Role player or not, on this team if you can play post defense and rebound your wanted. Kenyon fills both of those needs. I am not sure how much the nets need a pg but a shoot first pg like nash could be a good complement to kidd. Martin is also emerging as an improved post player he has a hook shot too. A lineup of
nick/daniels
Fin/howard
Dirk
K-Mart
Raef
would be quite formidable on defense and offense.

Its not about if he is a role player or not its that $87 mill contract for a role player which is a concern. Rashard Lewis didn't even get that much to be a first or second option on his team

Blazers mull Wallace deal

08/09/03

JASON QUICK

The Trail Blazers appear to be shopping around Rasheed Wallace, and they have considered a deal that would send the volatile forward and Ruben Patterson to the New Jersey Nets for Dikembe Mutombo and Kenyon Martin.

From Our Advertiser

"There have been some discussions, but there is not a trade on the table at this moment," coach Maurice Cheeks said Friday.

The Blazers apparently are hesitant to make the trade because general manager John Nash does not want to inherit Mutombo's salary, which is $17.9 million this season and $19.7 million next season. It appears that the teams are talking about different scenarios, one of which might include Arvydas Sabonis instead of Patterson.

Nash, who was the Nets' general manager from 1996-2001, was noncommittal Friday when asked about the trade.

"I'm not at liberty to discuss that," Nash said. "As a general policy, I won't confirm or deny that we are involved in a trade."

Nets president Rod Thorn was traveling to West Virginia for his son's wedding and could not be reached for comment.

Although Cheeks said he wants to keep Wallace, who has led the Blazers in scoring the past four seasons, he said the team has continually looked to trade him this summer.

"There have been a lot of things going on about Rasheed," Cheeks said. "And not just about Rasheed, a lot of other players, too. And there have been some deals on the table."

Wallace is in the final year of his contract, which will pay him $17 million. Although he has been the Blazers' best player the past four years, he also has come to symbolize the attitude and temperament of the troubled team, an image the new management is attempting to change.

Wallace led the NBA in technical fouls from 1999-2002, setting a record with 41 in -2000-01, and he has been suspended for 11 games during the past three seasons for incidents ranging from attacking a referee to throwing a towel at a referee to throwing a towel at a teammate. He was cited for marijuana possession last season.

"I know Rasheed has not been the best soldier," Cheeks said. "But I think he is trying to change. Right now, he is working out in Las Vegas, and for Rasheed to be doing that at this time of the year is a very positive sign."

Cheeks remained neutral, however, when asked whether he would support a trade that included Wallace.

"Rasheed is an important part of our team, and I'd like to keep Rasheed. But I also think we have to stay open about any deals that come about," Cheeks said. "Management has a difficult job to do. People want change, for us to go a different route."

As general manager of the Nets, Nash picked Martin with the No. 1 selection in the 2000 draft. The 6-foot-9 power forward averaged 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds last season, but like Wallace he has received suspensions for his conduct, primarily flagrant fouls.

Mutombo is a 12-year NBA veteran who was injured much of last season, limiting him to 24 games, in which he averaged 5.8 points and 6.4 rebounds in 21.4 minutes. A 7-2, 265-pound center, Mutombo is considered a defensive specialist, and he is the only player in NBA history to win the league's Defensive Player of the Year award four times (2001, 1998, 1997, 1995). He also received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 2001.

Cheeks would not say whether he would endorse a Wallace and Patterson for Mutombo and Martin trade.

"My job is to work with what I have," he said. "But I think we are keeping our eyes and ears open."

Notes:

Sabonis is expected in Portland next week to receive a physical examination from the Blazers. The team and Sabonis have until Friday to determine whether his $7 million contract will be guaranteed.

I don't think martin is a role player. The guy could be a star, when malcontents that have potential come available its time to nab him. We will never be seeing a guy with skins on the wall on the block you might see this guy. Seems to me your just being argumentative.
Their is a reason he was taken with the first pick in 2000, so this guy has way more then what rashard was the comparison isn't even close.

Right. Because we all know that Las Vegas is where you should go when you really need to get down to business and avoid distractions.
