The Mavericks might have an overflowing roster, but one more piece of big business remains. Owner Mark Cuban said Tuesday that he has reached a verbal agreement on a six-year extension worth an estimated $90 million with star forward Dirk Nowitzki.
Nowitzki has until Oct. 31 to sign an extension, which would kick in starting with the 2002-03 season. The deal will take Cuban's off-season spending into the $250 million range – almost as much as his $280 million purchase of the team – after including long-term deals also signed by Michael Finley, Shawn Bradley, Tim Hardaway and Evan Eschmeyer.
"Yes [we have a verbal agreement], but it's not something we will rush to do," Cuban said of Nowitzki, who won't be back in Dallas until late September as he completes his obligations with Germany at the European Championships. "To Dirk, it's not a high-priority item."
Nowitzki could not be reached for comment in Turkey, where he has led unheralded Germany to the quarterfinals – along with Bradley, serving as Germany's backup center, and Mavericks assistant coach Rolando Blackman.
Nowitzki and his personal coach/adviser, Holger Geschwindner, have maintained since the start of the summer that they were content to wait until the Halloween deadline to finalize the agreement, thereby giving Cuban and coach/general manager Don Nelson time to complete their roster retooling.
Nowitzki is already under contract for the coming season at $2.2 million. He will eventually get precisely the same money figures as three other prominent members of the draft class of 1998 who have agreed to extensions: Toronto's Vince Carter, Boston's Paul Pierce and Golden State's Antawn Jamison.
