Manning Retires After 15 Seasons in NBA

CHICAGO, Sept. 12 -- Mark Bartelstein and Priority Sports would like to announce the retirement of Danny Manning. After 15 storied seasons in the NBA, Manning has decided to leave the court as a player and return to his alma mater, Kansas University, where he will be actively involved with the athletic department and the men's basketball program in particular.

Manning leaves behind an illustrious career that includes numerous highlights and accomplishments. As a collegiate superstar, he was named the 1987-88 Wooden and Naismith Awards winner as he led his Jayhawks to an NCAA title. Those achievements were followed up by being the first overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft.

Manning is a two time NBA All-Star who ends his career with more than 12,000 points, 4,500 rebounds and 2,000 assists. He earned the 1997-98 NBA Sixth Man Award while a member of the Phoenix Suns. Manning is not only leaving his mark on the court; he will also go down in history as one of the few athletes in sports to have overcome three separate ACL injuries.

Manning's passion for the game, however, has not subsided. Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins and head basketball coach Bill Self have provided Manning with the perfect opportunity. He will be working with young athletes both on and off the court at Kansas, where he earned a degree in communications, as both a mentor and an advisor.

Priority Sports congratulates Danny Manning on an excellent career and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Class guy who knew how to play the game. Can't help but wonder what kind of career he would have had without the early knee injuries.

I really enjoyed having him as a Maverick, nice guy to have on the team.

It would have been nicer to have him 3 or 4 years earlier. He could have really helped us. He was a really good passer and he just understood the game.

I just hope Carmello Anthony does not have a career like Manning did.

What do you mean? Injury prone?

They both have something in common interms of taking their respective teams to ncaa championships as freshmen.

Danny Manning came into NBA with a lot of hype and was expected to do much more than what he did. Similarly Melo comes with some expectations from NBA fans.

Basically Manning underachieved(due to various reasons, viz., injuries) and I want melo to have a better career than that.

I think injuries killed him. And didn't manning tear his ACL in college? He was a disappointment considering he was the #1 pick in the draft, but he was no Pervis Ellison. He did contribute. Didn't help to be drafted by the Clippers either.

As far as Carmelo, I would be surprised if he's not a perennial All-Star. Watching him in the Final Four I'm thinking, "this kid does not need to be in college". He was toying with Texas and they were a great college defensive team. He's a scoring machine and a pretty good rebounder. Just hope he can stay healthy early.

Carmelo is Glenn Robinson.

Carmelo does nothing special except score. And when you are 6'8" small forward that only scores.... you may have a long career in the league, but a semi ordinary one, a la Robinson.

It depends on how much you score. Iy you can put up 28-30 per game there's nothing ordinary about that. If all you do is score about 20 per game, like Big Dog your right, that is ordinary.

Also, Robinson doesn't play a lick of defense. We don't know what kind of defender Carmelo will be since he played a zone in college. If he wants to work at it, he can be a good defender.

Lastly I've never considered Robinson a big time player. Carmello stepped up when the lights were brightest last year. If he can take that to the pros, he'll have a great career............assmuming KiKi can get Denver to the point that they play big games.

Why do you say that? Is height the only factor you are taking into account?

Danny Manning led KU to the championship as a SENIOR.

I tend to agree with you, dirno, but Glenn Robinson was a superb rebounder in college as well.
