Lawmakers talk trash about upcoming NBA Finals
WASHINGTON -- Not to be outdone by the governors of their respective states, U.S. senators from California and Michigan have made their own wager on the NBA Finals.
Michigan senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin, backing the Detroit Pistons, have put up a package of cherry pies, Vernor’s ginger ale, Motown CDs and Michigan-made wines.
California senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer have wagered movie DVDs, two tickets to Disneyland, a crate of avocados and two bottles of California wine on the Los Angeles Lakers.
The series begins Sunday in Los Angeles.
All four senators are Democrats, but they still traded trash talk with each other Friday.
“The Pistons swept the series with the Lakers the last time they met in the finals,” Levin said. “It may take a little longer this time, but I’m confident the Pistons will once again bring home the championship. And when they do, I’ll be shouting „I’m going to Disneyland.”’
The Californians issued a sharp rebuttal.
“Motown is going to be singing the blues after the Lakers get through with the Pistons,” Boxer said.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm also have wagered a dinner made from their home-state products.
The Pistons are making their first appearance in the finals since 1990. The Lakers have won three of the last four NBA championships.
