2004-2005 - - If It Is To Be... It Is Up To...Dirk Nowitzki
There has been alot of talk in Maverickland about the 2004/2005 season.
It is only July, and I expect a deal for SOMEONE...maybe Dampier, maybe Zydrunas...however, it may be a Vlade or Chris Anderson type. As long as we get someone to team with big Shawn, however, I will be looking forward to this year for one reason.
It is time.
Time for what?
It is time for Dirk Nowitzki to become what Tim Duncan is to San Antonio and what Kevin Garnett is to Minnesota.
It is time to become the Franchise.
He has the ability...there is no question about that . He is seven feet tall, and he also -
likes to grab 12+ boards with regularity in the playoffs,
likes to lead the playoffs in scoring, likes to drop 46 and 42 in the playoffs,
likes to go 30+ and 12+ om elimination games,
likes to stop Tim Duncan in the post when the game is on the line.
I mean...we have all seen it so many times in the playoffs:
The desire, the ability, the absolute unstoppable force that has willed this team past so many games.
We all see it in the playoffs ever year...we all saw it in the last two months of 2003.
It is now time to see it for the whole year.
It is time for Dirk Nowitkzi to become the MVP of the whole damn league.
It is time for Dirk to put all the jokes about his defense to rest.
It is time for Dirk put up 20 shots per game.
It is time for Dirk to demand the ball.
We know the ability is there. It is time to unleash the beast that is Dirk Nowitzki.
On the same note...it is time for the brass to surround this squad with a team that will compliment his abilities to the highest extent possible. People to defend, knock down the open jumper and get the freaking ball to Dirk.
In addition, it is time for Don Nelson to go to Dirk Nowitzki in the post, early and often, take advantage of his multitude of abilities, including shooting, getting fouled and hitting foul shots, and passing out of double teams.
Bottom Line: In my opinion this will be the year when the legacy of Dirk Nowitzki will be decided, one way or the other.
Hitman

Hitman - You're so damn right!! The Theory of Big Three is blown to pieces. Now Mavs are as much a Dirk's team as the Spurs are Duncan's. Hopefully Nellie would play him at his rightful spot, that is four... and hopefully Dirk would live up to our expectations, that is to lead this team to a championship!!!

Exactly why we don't need someone like Vince Carter.
Oh, Hitman, while your at it, send this as an email to Nellie...

Hitman rules! No matter what trades will be made 2004/2005 is a decisive year for Dirk and the Mavs. It´s obvious - Dirk knows it, Nelson knows it, Finley and Avery know it and it is their responsibility to explain it to anyone who doesn´t.

You are right on the money Hitman!
If everybody (i.e., Mavs Front Office) would buy into that, then we would stop chasing rainbows trying to add stars to the roster (i.e. Walker, Jamison, Stackhouse, maybe Vince Carter!) and start adding the best possible "pieces" to compliment Dirk: young, athletic players who can give us some D (i.e., Harris, Daniels, Howard) and a bad-ass, tough as nails center to clog the paint. Then, just roll the ball out and everybody will bust their butts with the clear understanding of who the MAN is!
I have no problem trying to add a serviceable PG to the mix to help the Harris transition, but otherwise the Mavs need to devote all resources to acquiring a decent center so Dirk can flourish at the 4. In other words--this is Dirk's team. STOP THE VINSANITY!

I'll settle for Dirk buying into it. Until that happens, this is Finley's or Don's or Cuban's team. The responsibility is on Dirk.
|
How is Dirk gonna snatch the clipboard out of Nellie's hands so he can draw up a play for himself at the end of a game?

That's a great post. It's up to Dirk, though. He can demand the ball, and Nellie will simply HAVE to give it to him.
He also needs to get in deeper before he gets the ball. He often sets up too far out.

Dirks never gonna be Duncan because of his defensive abilities, but Garnett he definately could be pretty damn close because I think Dirks D is pretty close to Garnetts.

Dirk's D is underrated, get him a C like Damp and I bet those defensive defficiencies go away pretty quickly.

Yeah, OK. Has that ever been disputed?

We already got rid of Walker? AJ's shooting was just fine and Steve was the main guy to deliver for Dirk...

Bump.
We need this game, and we need Dirk to be Dirk if we expect to win the NBA championship.
We need 30 plus from the dude tonight.
