google ads
Thinking about joining the Google AdSense program and putting up some text-based ads somewhere to help pay for the site. But since it's only paid based on actual clicks, do you guys think there would be much point in putting some up? I would probably only do the small text boxes (no images).

RE: google ads
If it helps pay for the site, I think we could all take a few moments every now and then to click on the ads.

RE: google ads
I need to make a contribution, that's for sure. About how much are you looking to raise to maintain the site for a while? I'm sure a large number of people would be willing to contribute at least a small amount as part of a fundraising effort.
How much does one need to contribute for the privilege of having one's own custom avatar?

RE: google ads
You can contribute any amount you want and get a custom avatar (even a buck is appreciated ). I may just put up the Google ads for a couple weeks and take them down if they're not being used.

RE: google ads
if you link to amazon or Ebay or the mavs NBA store, I'll go there and buy stuff. I think google requires you to use the link and then buy something?
if not I'll click on the link a few times every time I'm on.

RE: google ads
If it helps then go ahead. It certainly doesn't sound like a hindrance. At the same time, and I think ultimately the best way to support this site is through donations. Everyone needs to help out some. I understand everyone is in a different financial situation, but every dollar counts.
Considering the time many spends on here. Giving $10-$20 a year is VERY resonable. In fact now that I think of it, I am probably due.

I do need to contribute again, but I will also religiously click on any banner ads that you put up in order to help defray costs, for as long as they are up...

RE:google ads
I think that's a great idea, it isn't too intrusive. My brother's site has them & he paid for all of his server costs by getting his friends to click on them. Anything to help keep the site going, DJ.

RE:google ads
If these are the same Google text ads that show on the right-hand side when viewing messages in Gmail, then I think they'll get a decent number of click-throughs. I'm often surprised at what sort of context-specific stuff pops up over there when I'm using Gmail.
DJ.. just out of curiosity, how much traffic does this site generate on an average weekday? a gameday? Do you have any per-day measurements as far as total pages viewed, total visits to the site, or total unique visitors?
I'm in that biz professionally, so... I'm curious.

Free Kobe Jersey as I was looking at the D-M.com-Kobe hatefest. Funny.
Anyway, whats up with the logo up top? It no longer links to the main page.

Fixed the logo.
I figure we'll try using just one text box ad for now and see if it does anything.

RE: google ads
I added a Google search box at the very bottom of each page. Is this something that you all would use? If not, I could just take it off.
Also, I think the Google ad at the top does have the potential to cover some of the site's expenses, so it would be great if you all could take a couple seconds each day and click it once or twice. I'm not sure how Google tracks everything so it might not count if you click a bunch of ads in a short period of time. Yesterday, we generated about 75 cents from clicks...out of nearly 30,000 total pageviews, there was a grand total of 30 clicks heheh. It was a pretty crappy day Mavs-wise, so here's a big thanks to those of you who were still in the right frame of mind to click

RE:google ads
So, 40 clicks generates $1? I guess, that means I just dropped $3 in the general fund...

RE: google ads
If only it were that easy So far today, 33 clicks have generated a whopping 14 cents... Because of Google's click-analyzing technology, one click every hour or couple of hours would probably be best.
------
Google strictly prohibits any method used to artificially generate clicks or page impressions and closely monitors clicks using engineering systems and human analysis.
Google's proprietary technology analyzes clicks to determine whether they fit a pattern of use intended to artificially drive up an advertiser's clicks or a publisher's earnings. Our system automatically distinguishes between clicks generated through normal use by users and clicks generated by unethical users and automated robots, enabling us to filter out invalid clicks. Advertisers are not charged for these clicks.
In addition to our automated system, we have a team dedicated to detecting invalid clicks using several specialized tools and a wide variety of techniques based on extensive experience tracking and monitoring user behavior and analyzing scenarios. We continually upgrade our detection mechanisms to proactively combat invalid clicks.

DJ, do you think it would help if you stuck this thread in the Mavs' forum since it draws more visitors? Might get more people clicking even though it isn't technically a Mavs-related topic....

Excellent link:
AidCamps International
Short Term Volunteer Work Overseas on Third World Development Aid Projects
AidCamps International is a registered charity offering volunteers the opportunity to participate in short term voluntary work development aid projects overseas run by local non-governmental organisations in the third world.
Participate
in a third world development aid project
Experience
authentic local culture, customs and food
Integrate
with truly local people, not just the tourist industry
Witness
the real situation for many people on the planet
Visit
local and regional heritage sites
Live
amongst the people you are helping
In addition to the volunteer work involved our two and three week projects provide volunteers the chance to meet, live, and work overseas with local people and experience their culture first hand, while providing a solution to a local problem, as requested by the locals.
Our itineraries also include other local problem awareness visits, as well as trips to local and regional heritage sites, national parks, and cultural centres, so that volunteers can get a feel for both the richness of the area and the predicaments faced by its inhabitants.

Man.... ABC is pushing this show "Day Break" really hard. That's the only google ad I've seen over the last few days on this site. I wonder how much that cost them....
edit: Go ahead and click it.... this show looks like it has some promise....
