Parcells agrees to extension through '07
No Tuna surprise: 2-year extension for Parcells
IRVING, Texas -- Bill Parcells is coming back for at least one more season with the Dallas Cowboys -- and maybe even two.
The team announced Friday that Parcells agreed to a new contract through the 2007 season. The restructured deal is worth $5 million and $6 million a year, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported.
"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue what we have started here," Parcells said in a news release. "The Cowboys organization has been the fairest of fair to me, and hopefully I can repay them with an improved performance."
Parcells, 64, had a year left on the four-year, $17 million contract he signed in January 2003. However, he left his three previous coaching jobs mid-contract and there was speculation he might do it again.
The question diminished as this week went on and Parcells continued showing up at his office every day. Still, the announcement helps turn attention back to what the club will do to continue the turnaround that saw them go 9-7 after being 6-10 the previous year.
"This is about continuity and building upon the pieces we have in place as an organization and as a football team," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We aren't where we want to be at this point, but we're definitely moving in the right direction and feel very good about the future."
The Cowboys are 25-24 under Parcells, counting the postseason. Over his 18-year career, he's 163-123-1, good for ninth on the career win list, with two Super Bowl wins.
In three years with the Cowboys, Parcells has enhanced his reputation as a turnaround specialist, but he still has plenty to accomplish -- starting with winning a playoff game.

Hmm... I didn't expect a 2 year extension. Let's hope we take the next step next season!

Good for the Cowboys and not bad for Bill's bank account either.

I just hope he can quit taking the air out of the football...yuck that's some ugly ball.

Really? I've always thought Payton was the guy encouraging Bill to open it up and be more aggressive. No way to know, just always how I felt.
I guess the one year extension means we'll go through the same "is he staying" crap this time next year.

I'd expect Terrell Owens here next year in a last-gasp attempt for Parcells to win his last Lombardi trophy. With some top-tier offensive linemen in free agency or the draft, and another playmaker or two on defense, I full expect the Cowboys to compete for the Super Bowl title next year.
After we get TO on board, if we shore up both lines (yes, defensive line as well), it's all gravy from there.

If Bill can get TO and Keyshawn to co-exist he'll solidify himself as the greatest coach in history in my eyes. I'm not sure it can be done.

ESPN is running a story on TO going to Tampa. Who knows. I hate TO but I like winning and TO can get it done. I'd like to take a short contract on him to see how it goes.

Shouldn't have gave him a damn thing. Hell it seems he's been getting worse since he's gotten here. We've been to the playoffs 1/3 years he's been here and the year we went to the playoffs was our worst team. I just expected more from Bill. What Bill record is as a Cowboy doesn't concern me. I just want to know is he building a team for 1 year or for the future? He's been here 3 years and he still hasn't found a qb. Are we sure we even have a running back? Where's the stud wide reciever who's not 34 going on retiring? I'd take a 5-11 season knowing I have a David Carr or a Carson Palmer at the qb spot. Not a 35 year old who is on his way out the door. I give Parcells credit for his draft. Not sure how much I should give him but if he was behind last years draft he deserves major props. I even give him credit for the Bills trade even though we passed up Stephen Jackson. But I expected more youth on the offensive side of the ball by now.

Terrell Owens so far is 2 and 0 in destroying a franchise. I see no reason why TO can't be 3 and 0 with the Cowboys. I was for Artest joining the Mavs but while I don't doubt Artest is crazy TO is something else. Maybe just an idiot. How do you make problems with Donovan McNabb who may be one of the most classiest people in the NFL?
The thing about TO though is that if he were to become a Cowboy this is it for him. He atleast attempts to try and destroy the Cowboys franchise he's destroying his career. Maybe this time around he gets it. He atleast has to acknowledge that this is his last go as a professional player. This is his last chance to prove he can be a professional in this league without destroying a franchise.

In Bill's defense, I have no doubt (and I'm sure the rest of you don't, either) that we would have been 10-6 if we had needed to be, and I heard the Mick say that this year's combined win percentage of playoff teams set a record. For the past ten years or something, I don't know. But hey, 10-6 wouldn't have got you there.
I'm as homer as they come, but I really do think that the Cowboys are on the right track. Honestly, I don't think they even need TO. But I'd like to have him.
D2K, interesting observation about Keyshawn and TO on the same roster. I guess I had just tended to see them as a 1-2 punch. I'm thinking more of TO taking Glenn's place in the starting lineup, and us wreaking some matchup problems in the nickel. I like Crayton, but I think I would prefer TO, Johnson, and Glenn to Johnson, Glenn, and Crayton.

I love Keyshawn but he can be insecure at times.
- Back with the Jets he seem to be bothered by the attention that Chrebet was getting and lashed out in his book
- He feuded with Sapp in Tampa
- He couldn't get along with Bryant in Dallas
- He took offense to Irvin saying that we don’t have a no. 1 receiver
- He took offense to Irvin saying that we don’t have a no. 1 receiver
With that in mind, imaging the potential media circus around TO. Now if anybody can get Keyshawn to look past all that and just play it's bill...I'm just not sure it can be done.
