Dirk vs. the U.S.
It may happen.
How many American Mavs fans would root for the Dirk led German team to beat the Dwayne Wade/Carmello led U.S. team?
Please don't vote if you're not American or a Mavs fan, as your answer should be obvious.

I'm rooting for Germany regardless b/c Dirk's the only Mav playing in the tourney.

In my head, I want to root for the U.S. I feel like it's wrong to root against your country.
But in my heart, I find it impossible to root against Dirk.

Germany wouldn't have much of a chance, but my Dirk Foam Finger would be waiving wildly.

If Josh had played, it might be different. But he didn't, so it's not. I root for Dirk to make Dwyane Wade cry.

Its a sporting event.
I feel I'm doing my patriotic duty when I vote for president, participate in local bond elections and provide volunteer work for my local community.
Rooting for the U.S.A. Basketball team...not so much. Hell, I wouldn't be rooting for them if Dirk wasn't in the competition.

I'm an American, not a member of the Borg. I've been watching the Olympics and other International competitions my entire life. Most of the time, I'm rooting for the American representatives. I do have nationalistic pride and enjoy rooting for my country.
That doesn't mean that nationalism has to be the only standard or value involved in deciding who to root for, and who to root against (I'm allowed to have other values, right?)
I didn't root for Nancy Kerrigan, I didn't root for Tonya Harding, and I dont' root for the Men's Basketball team. Never have, never will. They kicked the amateurs out of the system for the sole purpose of being able to dominate the rest of the world (and yes, I realize other countries were using pros as well). So when our guys are beating Team X by 50 points, it just doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. So that's "how the hell" I can root for someone else.
(Ha! As I type this someone reminds me that Tiger got bashed for suggesting Americans be paid to participate in the Ryder Cup. Nevermind that the networks are raking in millions...sorry got off course there.)

Corn rows and rap music do not represent my country. Why would anybody think Carmello Anthony is worthy of my support.

Still sour from the men's 4x100 meter relay in the Sydney olympics. Those four jerks ruined the All-America pass I had.

USA. I love Dirk as much as anybody, but this is an internatiol competition people. I stayed up late or got up early to watch every embarassing game in Athens and I say F%$K losing to other countries.
This is our game, and I want to see it get done by the US. Even if Dwyane Lame has to be on the team.
Not beating everyone in basketball is humiliating.
Go U.S.A

Gotta root for Dirk. He's the only Mav in the tourney and I don't really like the stacked USA team.
Once Germany is out, or if they get out, I'll root for the US.

Dirk all the way. Number 1: he is my favorite player. Number 2: he is a Maverick. Number 3: I will NEVER root for Dwyane "OOh OOh I got breathed on so it must be a foul, right Stern?" Wade.
I seriously doubt Germany will win. But I hope Green, Schultze (my favorite German player outside of Dirk) hit open shots and make USA work for everything.

The dirster, the dirkmeister, the dirksturminator.
I'm a very patriotic guy and if the dirkster doesn't win it then I'm all for the USA. However...I have a pretty difficult time looking at Wade so even if they win, I won't really be interested.
As far as rooting against your country, what if dirk were your brother? Would you still root against him? He's our baby, most here have huge man-crushes' on him. Rooting for him is quite understandable.

More than likely if Dirk were my Brother I'd be rooting for my Country anyway.... and he'd be playing for them as he is now.

Its not americas fault that there are more americans in the NBA(= Them being better).
So Thats not that great of a reason.

I don't think its necessary that I find any fault with NBA demographics in order not root for the U.S. team. I simply don't enjoy rooting for the NBA pros, and I resent the fact that U.S. amateurs have been frozen out of international competition simply because we wanted to save face after 1988.
And even so, how is your reason, or my reason, or anyone else's reason any better?
What if, like others, I simply wanted to root for an underdog? Since when is that not a good reason to root for somebody? Aside from geographic locality, its probably one of the more popular reasons for fandome.
I'm sure many sports spectators, at one time or another, have enjoyed rooting for underdogs. Its the single most important theme in ANY sports-related movie.
I suppose its not the Yankees fault that George likes to spend his money....but I won't be cheering them on either.

I'm not really surprised by the poll results but is still a little... On the on hand, the US team seems not quite popular in your country. On the other hand, if Dirk left Dallas, would you still vote for him against the US team?

Family >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Patriotism
And also I would be scoreboarding all of y'all.
