Which is the worst type of defeat to have to overcome?
I was reading the story involving AJ, where he says that he is tired of constantly being reminded how close the Mavs were to their first NBA title.
As both a fan and as a player--which type of loss is the worst--a loss in a playoff series (without getting to the NBA Finals) or a loss in the Finals themselves?
Is there a difference in the emotion, or they are basiclly the same?
I am not being a jerk in asking this question--I know the Finals were a real bummer for Mav fans. I cannot imagine how upset I would be if the Spurs would have lost in an NBA Finals. When we lost to Dallas last season, I basically just tried to deal with the diappointment by pulling for the Mavs and AJ getting his first ring as a coach.

It's hard to say. I definetly felt alot more disappointed after the Finals loss, but I'm still glad they made it there. If they had gone down to the Spurs, I doubt I would have been as disappointed. All in all, I think it's better to lose in the finals, especially for the Mavericks. They've proved that they can overcome the tough western conference. They know they can get back there, and hopefully they will. However, if I were a Spurs fan, I would be expecting nothing short of Finals appearance, and not making it that far probably stung pretty badly. I guess it's just different for different teams.

You're right. Spurs fans have gotten pretty spoiled. Anything less than winning the NBA Championship and a fourth ring is pretty much a failed season.

Stack said it best. You get that far, and you're this close to basically sweeping...you feel like you were robbed, like something was taken from you. It probably wouldn't have hurt quite as badly if it didn't happen the way it did, what with controversial whistles and stuff.

I think it hurts more when you get that far and then lose, but I think it makes them more confident and hungry next season. So I'm glad we made it as far as we did, even though it hurt more.

Are you guys really considering how terrible it would have been to lose Game 7 to the Spurs after Ginobili's three? Losing a 3-1 series lead, plus a 20-point lead in Game 7, and to be outlasted by the Spurs in the playoffs YET AGAIN?? Wasn't the label "little brother" old enough already? Wasn't the catchphrase, "Yeah, the Mavs are always good, but the Spurs are always better," old enough? Sit back and think about that scenario for a little while. What would your expectations for this season be then? How motivated would our team be then?
I'm not going to write off last season as a failure until we see what the Mavericks accomplish in the next couple of years. But if the Mavs had lost that Game 7, the verdict would need not wait.

Wise man here. It would have been horrific..Another hurdle down, one more to go.

Agree, beating the Spurs made it all ok. Had the Mavs lost to SA it would have been another failure. Losing in the Finals doesn't feel that bad especially since game 3 and 5 could have gone either way and the refs played a major part.

Obviously losing the finals is harder to bear than losing a playoff series.

I agree. Losing to the Spurs would've just felt like any other year.
Getting soooo close....thinking they had it almost wrapped up...is so harsh.
