the list is long...
people such as:
bill murray
Eddie Murphy
dan akroyd
j.belushi
chris farley
adam sandler
david spade
mike myers
dana carvey
chris rock
and i'm sure i'm forgetting some of the big ones..
my vote would have to go with bill murray.
he has enjoyed perhaps the most success box office wise.. although mike myers, adam sandler, and eddie murphy might have something to say about that...
however, i think bill murray has received more critical success than any of the three listed above.
just thougth i'd get everyone's thoughts

Chris Farley - the man was amazing in Tommy Boy. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Mike Meyers has to be up there.
Austin Power movies...although, So I Married an Ax Murderer is my favorite. Lord, he is funny in there.
Farley, miss him. Tommy Boy, could you ever get sick of watching that movie?
I have mixed feelings about Adam Sandler.

murray may have made the best jump, but i loooove Tommy Boy soo much that i have to say, with my heart, chris farley.
Rod, where ya been? You seem quiet lately.
eddie Murphy, i really like him. (when i was young and impressionable, though, i had a hard time not picking up his language.)

Good, because there will be no French lessons from me.
Actually, I had trouble NOT using his lang. Good thing my dad didn't catch me.
NO need for sorry. It's all in good fun.

Well if you go by box office numbers, Bill Murray is no. 1. Ghostbusters was the highest grossing comedy until There's Something about Mary. Plus his other successes puts him over Ackroyd.
And to think, Murray wasn't in the original cast.
But as far as single best overall character translation to film, it has to be the Blues Brothers. Still one of my favorite movies of all time. Any movie that features Ray Charles with a handgun must be considered a classic.
Do you realize nobody has even mentioned Chevy Chase?

Still trailing, but his numbers are increasing quickly.
Mike Myers
Shrek 267
Austin Powers 2: 205
54: 17
Austin Powers: 54
Waynes World 2: 48
So I married an axe murderer: 12
Waynes World: 122
Total: About 700 Million
There are a couple others but the box office is N/A
He also has Shrek 2, and the new Austin Powers. Those are probably good for another 400 Million.

I've seen you logged in from time to time. You know I'm on west coast time, and after midnight is my "secret time." That means I do whatever I want without feeling guilty. Err, let me explain: it started in college when I had to study all the time, and after midnight I didn't feel guilty for writing letters, reading, emailing, etc.). Are you watching your figure (post total) - you're not posting as much.
GREAT call MFF - The Blues Brothers is SUCH a great movie! Recognize my signature??

some of murphy's movies don't count...like the nutty professor movies and the dr dolittle movies..they sucked too much to count in this..so you must subtract.
also, part of what i used to judge was critical success..
murphy, virtually none where as murray has been successful at the box office as well as with critics

You obviously don't have kids. Those movies are GREAT for babysitting kids on a rainy day. They can watch them a hundred times and still laugh.
Eddie >tried< for a critical success with Harlem Nights. Nobody wanted that side of Eddie - they just wanted the trash talking Eddie. His success became his burden, he was hopelessly typecast. So he went back to formula comedy and became wildly successful again.

I liked Dr Dolittle - maybe because I saw it with my little cousin.

Dumb and Dumber had to be one of the most offensive movies in history. Nutty Professor was funny.

"Oh look who walked in, the oldest living negroe, did you just come from working in the underground railroad?"
That was from Nutty Professor II, and I about bust a damn gut when I heard that. I think both of them were witty in their own little ways, however it was different comedy in both so I can't really compare the two. Although I do think Nutty Professor is (the first one atleast) was pretty good. Not great, but I wouldn't say dumb and dumber was great either.
I'd rent both of them but not go to the movies to see them.

By the way, out of all the people that came off of Saturday night Live, I would say Dan Akroyd. I like him the most anyway, then I would say, Murry then Murphy.

i like akroyd as a character actor, i.e. driving miss daisy, but he was never "leading man" material. i have to go with murphy, if for no other reason than he's been able to go from his raunchy stand-up days to shrek and still remain popular and funny.
