Should the Mavs go for 70
Random Thursday News
By Matt Benson - 04/05/2007
+ In NBA news, Gilbert Arenas is done for the season with an injury to his left knee which will require surgery. Throw in Caron Butler’s injury and the Wizards are basically done come playoff time.
So this begs the question, will Avery gun for 70 wins or rest Dirk, JET and Josh Howard so no freak accident takes place with them?
Another possible draw back of sitting them is that they won’t be in a groove come playoff time and need a couple games to get going again.
Avery recently said he doesn’t care what seed or record the Mavs have, he just wants the team ready mentally and physically healthy.
Dallas has already won its second outright division title in franchise history but just needs three wins or three losses by Phoenix (or a combination of the two) to clinch the Western Conference regular season title.

Avery has some decisions to make, play or rest, how much play or how much rest. The great balancing act this time of year. One plus is that he is in position this year do what he wants. I think seventy would be great, but I would rather be healty and primed going into the playoffs. I say start backing off the minutes and give guys deeper on the bench some time on floor just in case they need to be called on.

@Denver
vs. Portland
vs. Clippers
@ Minnesota
vs. Utah
vs. San Antonio
@ Golden State
@ Seattle
It's an interesting schedule because it starts out easier and ends much tougher. (not counting Denver because they still need to wrap up the #1 seed) Avery said he might reduce minutes, but he also said he wants momentum going into the playoffs. Because of that, I can see them trying to win against Utah, San Antonio, and Golden State because they are possible playoff matchups. If the Mavs win the earlier games like the Dirk-less Mavs did against Sacramento, and are going into the last game 69-12, I can see them trying real hard even in that last game in Seattle.

NO. Get the 1 seed locked up in the next couple of games and then rest them or at least play the starters at least 25 minutes per game.

I can't see the Spurs giving us anything easy, and I don't know how much we'll want to push our guys by then.

It should (and probably will) be a balancing act. Balance of minutes and resting, carefully planned out by the Little General. If they win fine or if they dont, fine. 70 should not be that important.

If I know Avery, and if I know this team, they won't want to give the Spurs anything easy either.
Avery will reduce minutes, but I doubt he'll simply give away the big games.
And hey, this will be a tough playoff for everybody, but the Spurs probably even more so than the Mavs. Let's not give them extra rest either. We'll get ours after we sweep the first round.

Sounds like we'll have to choose one or the other.

So which do you choose? I say we go for reduction in minutes, even though I would love the 70 wins.

A championship ring is worth more than a 70-game record.
Resting your stars will give a team a better chance for a ring.
This is a no-brainer.
REST!

Dirkadirkastan signature quote by-alexamenos "Amare, Marion, Leandro, Boris and Raja sounds more like the roster of a Broadway musical than a championship calibre team. God is a Texan and he won't permit such a line-up to win a championship."
Glad God moved from Florida to Texas. I just wish he would have moved a year earlier.

If we're 69-12 before the last game...it would really suck to be one win away and have a 69 win season.

what's the big deal? 70's not the record. it's just kinda cool to say, but we can't let it be at the expense of a title. maybe if we had one or two rings already, then we could push for something like that. We should keep our concentration on the ring, not on 8 regular season wins. These mavs have had their focus on one real goal all year, and that's worked out for them. we have more than just rest to lose.

Right now we only have to be 64-18 because that's all we need to secure the #1 seed - any win after that is gravy... The playoffs should be the focus since regular season records don't equal rings!

It's also a completely different color: blue! Red sucks.

Even if we don't reach 70 a new franchise record in W's is pretty cool.
