What do you suggest he do to resolve this problem? He did admit it was a problem on the radio segment.
He wants to keep the conferences and divisions, because he wants local rival teams to play each other more often than teams far away. He's open to new ideas about playoff seeding though.
The problem with a plain 1-16 ranking system with that though is that East teams would get artificially high seedings play playing weaker teams more.
You could adopt Hollinger's idea, but it's way too confusing for casual fans.
You could keep the divisions, but rearrange the conferences, as in baseball where both leagues spread out over the country. For example, you could move the Pacific division over to what is now the East, and send the Atlantic division to what is now the West. It would achieve a little more balance in power and both conferences would be spread out over the country.
You could throw out the conferences, and have a similar seeding to what we have now, but it would be 1-16. The top eight seeds go to the six division winners and the two best non-winners arranged by record, with 9-16 arranged by record after that.
The question is what method best resolves the issues of travel, rivalries, and balance of power? There's no easy answer.
