Apartment Noise Reduction
I just moved into a new apartment. The street that my bedroom window faces is very loud at night. On top of that, the wall that faces that street is also pretty thin, so it's tough to get a good night's rest.
I've heard about noise reduction curtains and even wall padding, but I have no experience in that stuff. Anybody have any suggestions on curtains, padding, wallpaper, brands...etc?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Edit: Looking for something other than ear plugs. Sometimes it's hard to sleep with those things jammed in your ears and hearing my alarm in the morning is also a problem...

If you're just wanting it quieter while you sleep, it might be easier to just establish a loud, consistent noise in your room whilte you sleep. Some people need it completely quiet when they sleep, but I prefer something loud like a box fan going full blast. If you can sleep with something like that it's actually better than complete silence because it will drown out sudden noises, which is what tends to wake you up.
I got nothing on actual noise reduction.

Fans work wonders if you can tolerate them. White noise machines if you can't. Otherwise, I have no idea.

Great ideas, thanks...I was also hoping for something that I could just go out and buy at a store or something.

noise reduction drapes for the window and egg crates on the wall. You can do several things to hide the crates.... I once just used plywood in front of it, textured and painted. worked great.

I've never had any experience with noise reduction drapes, but I can say that the egg crate foam on the wall won't really work. It maaaay block out some really high frequency stuff, but that's not mostly what you are hearing anyway. Most of everything else is going to come straight through.
I have a BS in Audio Engineering Technology, and we actually did an experiment in class with the egg crate stuff and a reference mic, and it made very little difference. If anything, the plywood in front made more of a difference, depending on how it was attached to the wall. When sound hits a wall, the whole thing vibrates very minutely, but the vibrations can be transferred through the studs and onto your drywall. Its like a very big drum head.
The absolute best solution, although probably not possible in an apartment, is to build a room within a room with staggered studs ( http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messa...9/288346.html). You can fill the space between with fiberglass insulation, but plain air is actually a pretty good insulator.

I dealt with this in college.
The answer was vodka. Cheap vodka.

If you want it quiet, there are only two choices. 1) poke out your ear drums or 2) get out of the loud apartment.
If you just want to survive it, then fans, noise machines, drapes, vodka and other things are good options. eggcrates not so much since apartments are already small and subtracting 3 inches from every wall isn't attractive.

Who said anything about egg crate foam? I was referring to the egg crates you get when you buy eggs. Not the cheap styrofoam ones.... the ones like you get at Tom Thumb.

forget egg crates and egg crate foam. Go with eggs. Real eggs. After a week, the smell will be so bad, you'll forget all about the noise.

I second the fan idea. Works very well for drowning out both my roommate's sometimes annoying music as well as the constant ringing in my left ear.

forget eggs. Go with chickens. Real chickens. After a week, you'll be evicted and the noise wont matter.

When I was little my bedtime was 8:30, so I always watched the Simpsons on Sunday night at 8:00. To this day when the Simpsons come on I feel drowzy.

Forget the chickens, go with gay men. After a week of sleeping on erect gay men, you'll have smooth skin and HIV.

Though there are noise reduction windows available ( 3 layers glass ), most renters will avoid them for $$$-reasons. When it´s just one-layer glass currently, this is the main noise-factor.
There, of course, are ways to stuff out the room to get it quiet, but this is nearly not possible with a medium budget. And you are not the owner, right.
Maybe your renter is a gentle man. Try talking with him about your probs.

My advice..........move away from the area. Move to where your closest neighbor is nearly a mile away. That is what I did, and I love it.
Of course fuel prices are killing me right now driving to work.

The goal was to eliminate unwanted noise...not create it =P
