SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Chances are if you work in an office, you have participated in a NCAA March Madness pool.

But with the economy in a slump, this might not be the best time to take your focus off work.

A recent study by business consulting firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas conservatively estimated the tournament costs nearly $4 billion to U.S. businesses because of workplace interruptions.

Start with a pay scale of $18 per hour. There are 58 million basketball fans watching the NCAA tournament. Those fans are driving hard to the Internet and TV to the tune of 1.5 minutes per day over 16 business days. That comes to $3.8 billion lost productivity.

"It's never a good idea to put yourself in a position where you give the employer a reason as to why you might be the next one who gets the pink slip," said Kathy Masera, with the California Job Journal.

But Jeannine Franklin argued the distraction is good for morale.

"You know, it could kind of help people, get the focus off of the bad things that are going on at work and in the government right now," she said.
Haha !
