2-1: Mavs complete the LA sweep
2 big storylines:
First, our suffocating D over the last 6 minutes of the game iced it for us, where this was exactly the kind of game we would lose last year when our offense went flat. We were able to limit them to 31 points in the second half, similar to our performance against the Lakers last night. Damp was studly again, and we really put the hammer down offensively in the third and defensively in the 4th when we had him in instead of Hump. Dirk was dragging in the 4th Q but hit a big shot to put it out of reach with 30 seconds left. Terry was surprisingly a defensive beast in the passing lanes. Our best 5 man set from last night (kidd/terry/marion/nowitzki/damp) was our best set by far tonight again.
Second, my God, these Clippers really suck. Highlights include Sebastian Telfair giving us 4 points with .9 seconds left in the first half, Kaman getting a shot clock violation after playing 40 minutes in a B2B and having the game of his life for his team and having his coach yell "you can't see the clock??," and Craig Smith's game clinching missed alley-oop. Some really good laughs tonight.

This puts us in a three-way tie at the top of the division.

Those starts of the 4th with JJB are getting us in trouble.

Barea did everything in his power to lose this game tonight, he just couldn't overcome Dunleavys complete ineptness as a coach.

We played so stupid. Good luck we played the clippers, they are always even more stupid.
Damp again GREAT. He had 2-3 awful moments but the rest was fine. Kaman was just on fire from outside.
Jet, go home and find your damn shot
JJB, you SUCK
Josh, please play allready tuesday.
PS: Im telling to get Kaman for like 2 years. Josh for Kaman. But if Kaman keep on playing like that he is untouchable...

Great D to seal this win, limiting them to 31 points in the second half when our O went cold. Damp was studly again, Dirk did work, and Gooden seems to be at the bottom of the rotation.

I wonder if those who thought Kaman couldn't play any more so we shouldn't go after him are still around?
I know the Mavs had to be tired, but great way to fight through it and get the win.

So is there any way we could package JJB for a trade for a center?

Sessions would've helped...seeing as Roddy's not ready,JJb is erratic/no D and Gooden looks terrible so far when not injured. hope we get something good for Gooden's expiring. We're thin up front even with him

I hope Hump keeps knocking down those mid-rangers, cause lord knows he's going to keep taking them. I liked his off-the dribble dunk tonight too.

I don't think I really want a center that someone would give up for a "JJ Barea Package"

I will say I thought this was one of Barea's worst games in recent memory. He was shading entirely too far off his man routinely and it cost us 6 huge points, on a 3 by Telfair to give LA the lead near the end of the half and on a 3 by Gordon to bring them within 4 in the 4th. He was also remarkably ineffective on offense, but... hey, even Dirk had five turnovers tonight. I think this game was a little bizarre, keeping in spirit of the holiday.
Mavs were going for the jugular, bringing in Dirk at the start of the 4th after only 1:30 of rest at the end of the third. Didn't quite work out that way. But I'm just glad they got the win.

Have to admit, give the Clippers a year more experience and
Davis
Gordon
Thornton
Griffin
Kaman
will be a nice and young team. Of course health will be still an issue with Baron. And that Sterling maybe blows it all for money...
Ah and they must get rid of Dumbleavy, he is so horrible...

Loving the easy buckets and defense Marion brings. Can't wait to see J-HO next to him on defense. Serious wingspan

P.S. for anyone watching the Clippers broadcast... anyone know why those broadcasters hate each other so much?

definitely a nice young nucleus. Thornton looks better on paper than in reality. he's basically just a scorer. they need an Ariza-type who does the little things at the 3 and they're set

I think Roddy deserves a chance to show us first if he is ready or not. What made Barea ready? He got his chance and made good on it. Even in the closing minutes of the Laker game Roddy came out running. This guy is just looking to explode.

Lol, I kept saying that too. They were making snarky jabs at each other that were soo thinly veiled as jesting. You could cut the tension with a butter knife. I found it fairly comical. The guys like:
"What about 6 years ago?"
"...Well, they weren't good then"
"Well always means always, that's not always!"

Haha, I also really enjoyed the discussion about whether Mark Cuban would bother to learn the color announcer's name, and the extended argument on whether "2 pointer" meant the same thing as "not a 3."

I hope Howard buys in when he comes back because the team chemistry on this team is great right now, Marion changed this team and now there playing good team defense.

If Roddy came into the game and made the mistakes Barea was making tonight he would be benched for the season.

the color guy is Michael Smith whom the Celtics drafted #13 from BYU in 1989 one pick ahead of Tim Hardaway and 4 before Shawn Kemp. The beginning of the decline of Red Auerbach's basketball mind(?)he compared Smith to Larry Bird

I'd still love Camby here for playoff ball but not sure he's much improvement over Damp at this stage although he's more mobile and can protect the rim some

To be fair to those people, Kaman had a career night. The Clippers announcers were constantly astounded by things he seemed to have added to his repertoire overnight (all those crazy jump hooks?).
Damp was going crazy tonight. His defense was very solid, and he actually showed some athleticism at points... amazing!
JET must be a 787, because his coming was way, way delayed this game.
Dirk quiet for long stretches, but at the end he really showed why he's the superstar.

indeed. especially since a serviceable point guard is way easier to find than an ambidextrous, rebounding, shot blocking center with a soft touch and great footwork

Mavs are playing superb D right now. Honestly, their offense has been pretty bad. They've looked very slow and lethargic on the offensive end a lot so far this season. IMO, they've been bad more than good on that end. But boy, they've stepped it up tremendously defensively. The Mavericks are as athletic and as versatile as I've ever see them and that's paying off tremendously on the defensive end.
Also, Dirk looks as good as I've ever seen him on d. His legs look fresh, and he's really reacting quickly out there.
I think we all know the offense will start clicking soon. There are too many guys on this team with track records that just say they will. But you have got to be darn happy on how they're winning these games. They're playing tough, hard nosed, in your face d. Well done.
BTW, I really like this quote by Kris Humphries...
"For us, we had a disappointing loss at home and this (the Lakers) is a really good team, defending champs," Humphries said. "It says something about us. A lot of teams get disappointed at home and then, well, it's LA, it's OK if we lose. Just play hard. But no, we were trying to come in and win.
"You never want to say that it's good to get a loss. But sometimes a loss can open your eyes."

Yeah I don't quite get it either. I didn't get to watch all the game but looking at the box score, he didn't seem to have that bad of a game. Not to mention, he's just the backup point guard...

He made quite a few big mental mistakes on D... which don't mesh well with the physical limitations he has already.
He did make up for one 3 though by coming back and knocking down one of his own.

it's not that he had a bad game. he brings energy and can create shots for himself which this team sorely needs. he just has obvious limitations. he over-dribbles and his defense is suspect. sounds alot like Jet(who had a couple of clutch steals tonight btw). JJB, Jet and J-HO all love to pound the rock overly much. part of the reason we were so low in 3pt. shooting pct. a year ago. our guys who can penetrate NEVER kick and kill ball movement
