Postgame thread - Mavs out-D'antoni Dan Tony
Dirk got a double-double with 29 points on 10-16 shooting (2-4 from downtown, 7-7 FT) and 11 rebounds.
Chandler also got a double-double with 15 points on 6-9 shooting and 11 rebounds (3 offensive).

Barea had 4 TO's (seemed like more), but he definitely made up for it with 22 points on 7-12 shooting (3-4 from downtown and 5-5 from the charity stripe).
Not a bad game for Rudy...

Dirk had a great game on one leg.
Barea saved himself after a horrible start with three quick TO.
Marion was awful. Beyond awful.
Felton is still a horrible PG. Cant even count how many time he refused to pass to open teammates.

Nice win. I'm off to bed again. Pretty late here in Finland...

Two notes about the crowd:
1. Felton was dribbling with some moves against Terry, but Terry stayed in front of him but the crowd was like "Wooo" "Ahhh", Felton shoots, missed badly.
2. MVP Chants for Amare? Really? Funny was: "MVP, MVP", CLANK!
Good win, let´s hope Marion is back for the next game!

Dirk is 179 points away from passing the last blazer on the all time scoring list. That will be a very happy day for me.

This was our highest-scoring game of the season so far at 113.
Our 2nd-highest was 112 against the Clippers 4 games ago, our 3rd-highest was 111 against Rockets 3 games ago and the last two games we scored 102 apiece.
I'm sensing a trend here...
EDIT: although we've only held our opponents to 98 PPG over the stretch (94 season average).

MMB instant recap
- Dallas is making it a habit now to win the battle of the boards. They had 54 rebounds to New York's 34. This was the third consecutive game where the Mavs had more rebounds than their opponent.
|
Our rebounding was definitely a huge factor in this win; 32 of those 54 were grabbed by Dirk, Chandler and Marion (who made up for his godawful 1-8 shooting and 4 TO's with 10 boards).

Marion grabbing 10 boards is respectable given his performance.

Kidd also made up for his 2-10 shooting with 10 assists.
At least our cold shooters did SOMETHING right tonight - that's how you win games in this league.

JJB's offense has been surprisingly efficient lately. I'm still not a fan of his PG skills and decision making, but he's done a very nice job putting the ball in the hoop. His three point percentage has skyrocketed from 3% to 28%!

Two things you can forget about:
1. The Mavs trading anything of value for a backup PG.
2. JJ being moved out of the rotation once Roddy gets back (unless he starts bricking all his threes again).

We talked about him, in depth, on the last podcast. The numbers were bound to balance out eventually. If he can play closer to this level, you'll clearly take it. I'm not counting on it though. He isn't as bad as he was early in the season and it's hard to imagine he can stay as good as he is now...he's somewhere in between.
When discussing his potential against playoff teams, I think we came to the conclusion that the Lakers were the only significant team that could be a situation where Barea could thrive.

3P% before Dirk got injured: 8-40
3P% after Dirk got injured: 22-41

I agree. He's shooting around 45% from three in Jan. That will come down. But hopefully not for a few more weeks since he was soooo bad for sooo long. Really he's around a 34% three point guy.
I also agree that he can only thrive in select playoff situations...unfortunately I'm more than confident RC will trot him out there no matter the situation.

Those three things are pretty close to the top on my list, with Spike Lee, Willis Reed's "miracle" performance on a bad leg where he hit his first two shots and didn't score the rest of the game, and those god-awful orange and blue uniforms somewhere in the most-overrated top 20.

Why would Barea be matchup specific? The things he does are matchup-proof! If some playoff opponent wants to give Barea a little more attention, they will pay the price when Dirk et al shred them up. If they (wisely) choose to lay off him, he will just do what he do. It's pretty simple, really.

I suspect you're right on both counts. We'll see when it's all said and done where JJB's numbers settle, but I have to say that his jump shot right now looks as pure to me as it ever has, and there's no way the Mavs are looking at PG as a position of need this season. I'll still be hoping to see Booby get some minutes as the third point, and I expect he'll eat into JJB's minutes in the two- and three-guard sets soon enough, but we're a long way from seeing a shakeup in the depth chart at the 1.

That's a good point. Despite their shooting problems, Kidd and Marion were still able to contribute in other areas, even though Marion really had a bad game all things considered. Being ill would actually be a pretty good reason why he played the way he did. He just didn't look right and missed shots that he makes nine out of ten times.

I think a lot of it has to do with the defensive end. A guy like George Hill could really give JJB trouble defensively. The matchup with the Lakers looks more favorable due to Fisher and Blake being fairly slow compared to JJB, so he could exploit that weakness.

This presumes Barea's ability/desire to actually pass and make them pay for rotating to him. A skill he has been hesitant to exhibit thus far. If he learned to kick it out to an open shooter he would only become more effective.
