Default Mavs and Carlisle working on 5-year extension

This would be the best news since we got confirmation Houston wasn't matching Parsons' offer sheet, and a huge relief to get out of the way before what is almost certain to be a tumultuous season.

Said it in the other thread, but extending Carlisle is probably our best move of the offseason.

Agreed. RC might have been the 2nd most coveted free agent in 2016 behind KD.

Didnt expect this. I thought hes done when Dirk retires.

Cant really see him in a rebuilding program that we will be in about 2 years from now.

But if he really wants it than YES. Top5 Coach in the league.

Surprised to see this. FO knows this season will be a backslide. Lock up RC. Now get him a solid core to work with in the future.

Difficult to put any kind of negative spin on this news.

On Rick's second win, he'll surpass Donnie for most wins for a Mavs coach

Two more seasons and he'll be the longest tenured

Get it done

I think this confirms we won't be rebuilding from scratch for several years.
Rebuilding began last season when we signed Parsons and continued this season with the commitment to Matthews. I expect another similar signing next season to make it our new Big 3.
DJ's decision to stay in LA set us back a year in the rebuilding process imo.

My hopes for this season is that one (or more) of our youths (Jenkins, McGee, Powell, Anderson, Mejri) will step up into that role or at least elevate to become a critical piece on next season's roster.

This. For once we have new blood that could realistically develop into franchise (read "long term") players. Leaning towards Jenkins, Powell, Anderson when I say this. But Parsons and Wes are still young enough to be cornerstones. If they have a great year, then convincing another name to join them next summer is likely to happen. Then we have some very talented vets in their prime + young players coming into their own making big contributions.

Obviously, best case scenario. But, it's the way I like to think.

Also, I just don't believe Cuban will ever opt for full rebuild for as long as he believes we can make the playoffs with a roster. And, I don't see him not believing that unless we don't for multiple years in a row.

Rick Carlisle signs 5-year extension to remain Mavericks' coach, per report
Quote:
The Dallas Mavericks have given coach Rick Carlisle a five-year contract extension worth $35 million, reports ESPN's Marc Stein. The decision will keep Carlisle, one of the league's longest-tenured and well-respected coaches, with the franchise for a long time.

Carlisle is under contract for this season and the team has an option for next year. Both of those years will be honored, so the new deal will begin in the 2017-18 season and last through the 2021-22 campaign, Stein reports.

Carlisle is the third-longest tenured NBA coach, trailing the Spurs' Gregg Popovich and the Heat's Erik Spoelstra. He's amassed a 304-222 record in just over seven seasons in charge of Dallas. Carlisle led the Mavericks to the 2011 NBA title and has yet to post a losing season in Dallas. Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson called Carlisle "our Jerry Sloan" after last season, referencing the longtime Jazz coach that was in charge in Utah for 22-and-a-half years.

Carlisle's new contract puts him in a tie for the third-highest paid coach in the NBA, behind Gregg Popovich and Doc Rivers, but on par with Stan Van Gundy. That will likely change, though, before the deal actually begins in two years.
