My first reaction to this idea was a big no to Johnson. As interesting as it could be, he has been in the past just a bigger version of Monta Ellis - ball dominant. The difference? Johnson is able to make threes and should be a bit better passer.
I would really consult D-Will on the matter of picking up Johnson. I don't think they have so much bad blood. Plus, there's no chance Johnson would start as a Maverick, so all the misfits that Johnson and D-Will had in Brooklyn would be out of topic.
Problem with Johnson is that he is ball dominant. That doesn't with RC system. However, I do believe that this would make Mavericks stronger in general. Mavs can already play different styles and having Johnson come off the bench would give you another option how to play against any particular opponent.
I think that signing Johnson is much more significant in terms of that now you can trade freely Harris, Barea or Felton without concerns of how it influences your team. So, in theory, if you pick up Johnson, you also can get decent extra player in return. Although I have no idea who that decent extra could be... And of course, it is most likely that Johnson won't be available until after the trade deadline.
I really do like that Johnson is able to hit threes. This has been annoying for me since beginning of season with the Mavs. However I believe that Grizzlies have bigger need for Johnson and possibly provide better fit. If I had to predict, then Johnson ends up in Memphis.
Nobody should be wanting Johnson because he could defend bigger players that Matthews has a problem with. Seriously, no.
