With the #9 pick in the 2017 draft, the Mavs choose Dennis Smith Jr.
@ShamsCharania: Sources: Dallas is selecting NC State's Dennis Smith with the No. 9 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

I am totally on board with this pick. Not a project, not a gamble. A guy with a body, a brain and a game that are ready for the NBA. Can anyone remember the last NBA ready player we drafted?

His questions have always centered around work ethic. No way this kid slacks around Barnes, Dirk, Noel, and Rick. LEGGO MAVS.

Glad now we didn't do Wes/9 for Rubio/7. Weren't going to get Isaac, and Smith Jr/Rubio made no sense.

@EarlKSneed: Rick Carlisle says the Mavs Facetimed with Dennis Smith Jr. and told him if he's there at No. 9 he would be the Mavs' pick.

@Boweman55: I've never seen Carlisle gush about a young player like that. Already said he's a pencilled in starter, said tonight is "historic."
@townbrad: Carlisle said Smith told him he is most like Derrick Rose. A strong, slashing point guard.

Glad Nelson/Cuban didn't change their minds with Monk falling and get Randy Moss'd for a decade+...

Nerlens Noel also send DSJ twitter greetings. Bodes well for us resigning him.

To be fair RC also compared Jared Cunningham to Westbrook. Hopefully he's right this time .

@bobbykaralla: Michael Finley on the DSJ pick: "Unlike in past drafts, (this year) the guy we really wanted, we got."
@IsaacHarrisNBA: "He will give Dallas fans something to cheer about, especially on the break" -Fin on Dennis Smith Jr.

To be fair, Lauri is going to be a good player. He just didn't fit what the Mavs needed.

How about a round of applause for Michael Finley? He is the player that got me into the Mavs in the late 90s, and now he has a big hand in the draft. Kudos.

Tim MacMahon: Rick Carlisle leaves no doubt Mavs wanted Dennis Smith over Frank Ntilikina, saying there was “uproarious” applause when Knicks made pick.

Finley "Unlike the past drafts the guy we really wanted we got."
Off the top of my head I think that's Simba when we really wanted Delon Wright. And of course the Freak.

Frank was a brilliant smoke screen. Hiring his coach to help with the summer league was genius.

Mike Finley is why I became a true Mavs fan....I know for some it probably was Dirk.....Finley was all we had to root for here for awhile.

I don't think that was a smoke screen. I think the Mavs thought he wouldn't be there. Had Monk and DS been gone they take Frank IMO. It's been reported the Knicks have liked Frank for some time now.

Or we might have just hired the best guy for the job... Roddy knew that guy too, could have introduced us long before Frank came into the picture.

I always felt that, by being himself, Fin taught Dirk and Nash how to be a pro. He showed them how to act, when everybody's always looking. Its part of why Dirk is the man we are all so proud to root for.
I am jazzed to see us get someone who can friggin' score. As much as we talked about needing a pass first PG, that s not the direction the league is going to. Its Harden, Westbrook and Curry. At least now, when they play us, they should have to work on defense.
