<< U.S. team adds Wallace, Brand to provide more bulk on roster

USA Basketball saw a need to fortify the frontcourt of the U.S. entry in the World Basketball Championship in Indianapolis Aug. 29-Sept. 8.

On Wednesday, it addressed the issue by naming 6-9, 250-pound Ben Wallace of the Detroit Pistons and 6-8, 275-pound Elton Brand of the Los Angeles Clippers to fill the final roster spots.

"The committee did a great job addressing size and versatility by adding two players, in Elton Brand and Ben Wallace, who have a lot of width and who will rebound the basketball," U.S. coach George Karl said.

Wallace was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year this season after averaging 16.9 rebounds and 4.12 blocks per game. He is the fourth player to lead the league in both categories in the same season, following Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Brand averaged 18.2 points and a career-best 11.6 rebounds and received his first NBA All-Star berth.

University of Kansas senior Nick Collison, a veteran of six USA Basketball teams, was named the second alternate. Collison and Jay Williams of Duke, who has entered the NBA draft on June 26, will train with the U.S. team in California in August and participate in exhibition games against China and Germany.

The U.S. team opens pool play against Algeria at 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at the RCA Dome.

The 12-member team will include NBA players -- including the Indiana Pacers' Reggie Miller and Jermaine O'Neal -- for the second time in the 52-year history of the championship.

I wonder when they are going to have the exhibition game against Germany? And I wonder if they are going to televise it.

I feel sorry for Algeria.

August 22nd--vs China in Oakland

August 27th--vs Germany in Portland

Bayliss, as far I can see, the games won't be televised. That could change as we get closer to the date, though.
