What did I miss here? Why did they acquire him just to waive him?

G Barkley acquired by Bulls and waived

October 25, 2002

CHICAGO (Ticker) - The Chicago Bulls acquired guard Erick Barkley and an undisclosed amount of cash from the San Antonio Spurs on Friday in exchange for future considerations.

The Bulls subsequently waived Barkley, who averaged 4.0 points and 1.2 assists in seven preseason games with the Spurs.

A first-round pick in 2000, Barkley spent his first two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and 2.9 points and 1.5 assists in 27 career games. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.8 assists in 19 games last season, including four starts.

No, the Spurs had been trying to get rid of him for a while now. I remember they were trying to get Menke Bateer for Barkley, but the Pistons were wanting a draft pick.

I just don't understand the Bulls taking the contract and giving the Spurs future considerations only to turnaround and waive him.

I would think he could still land a team.
