I just thought i would put this thread up so everyone could voice their opinions on Dirk, what he needs to do to improve, and to how great he's going to be, and to when he will take over as this teams #1 player.

the last 57 games of the year, dirk averaged 23.3 points per game.
if he wouldn't have had a subpar last couple of weeks, that would be very close to 25.
yes, he will average 25 a game in the nba, and it won't be long before he does it

Dirk needs to
1) Work on defensive intensity. He can play good defense if he concentrates 100% of the time. Tell him to quit watching Juwan and start watching Buckner.
2) Work on passing skills. Supposedly that is the area that Dirk will concentrate on in Germany this summer.
3) Work on low post game. I would not concentrate on that yet, I would like to see how the rule changes affect the flow of the game first.
Dirk could be a top 5 player and it might happen as soon as next year.

a person with all of the skills and the height that he has.

Last night was the changing of the guard. I don't care that we lost- I knew we would. That game was a thing of beauty.
Dirk is God, ladies and gentlemen.
I can see this team 5 years down the road... Dirk in his prime, burning down the league with each outing, crushing small forwards in the post and sniping power forwards from the perimeter, occasionally switching to center and shooting guard to create nightmare problems for the opposing coach. The Animal Donnel Harvey, who shares Dirk's ability to play all positions but in all other respects is his perfect opposite and complement, the defensive rebounding monster who intimidates and leads the team with his ferocious athleticism and intensity. There's Bradley, the veteran leader of the team, blocking shots and defending the interior, and helping the younger guys with the knowledge and experience he's gained after 13 years in the NBA (including his 2002 MVP season). DeSagana Diop, the disciple of Bradley. Nash, the sniper, whose role in coordinating the offense has been unfortunately cut down with Dirk's emergence as a passer and playmaker. And finally, Greg Buckner, the defensive specialist with an unexpectedly explosive scoring ability. The fire is plain in his eyes when he is playing- lighting up opponents with his 18-foot fadeaway jumper- fire that has been in him since he watched his mentor and friend Michael Finley tragically die in a car crash at the hands of an enraged 42-year-old Karl Malone, a power forward with a drinking problem and a grudge after being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round four consecutive times by the Mavericks and the heroic Finley. Dunk after dunk after dunk over he and Olden Polynice- then the Mailman just snapped. Buckner remembers, and Buckner will not let Finley be forgotten...

And let's not forget the other members of the team, members who get less press but who all play important roles- Vitaly Potapenko, the enforcer/scorer. Eduardo Najera, the sparkplug/defender. Travis Best, the veteran backup point guard, determined to win the championship that poor officiating cheated him out of in 2000, struggling to find a home after losing his role in Indiana to a disagreement with his coach. And of course, grizzled old Vernon Maxwell, the shamanistic bench leader of the Mavericks of the Future...
Their day is coming...

Where´s the Kid to tell us we´re all wrong, and wheres MavsFanFinley to
By the way, did you know that:
With a false tooth implanted, Nowitzki was the Mavs' only force in Monday's season-ending loss. He had career bests of 42 points and 18 rebounds, adding six steals. He joined Michael Jordan as the only players with 40-15-5 playoff games since steals became an official statistic.
That was taken from an articel from sportingnews.
So there´s only one player left who can take the challenge?

Madape- It'd be a dream come true, though it'll almost certainly never happen... the only way I see it coming to be is if Isiah Thomas continues to idiotically not start Travis Best, and Best becomes fed up with his unfairly reduced role on the team...

Hell, we don't need any more players cause Dirk can play all positions--he can handle it all. Other guys like Fin and Bradley and Nash can just hold matches up in the air from the bench during the game.
Hey DJ, how about changing the boards name to Dirks-Mavs.com?

What the hell is wrong with all you Dirk freaks?? Finley and Dirk are both superstars, why the fu*k do we need to keep debating who is better than the other? It doesn't matter, so let's just drop it.

well, what did the title of the thread say?
dirk, the future SuperStar of the mavs.
i didn't say that finley wasn't a superstar, i just said that dirk is a future super star.
no reason to get mad.
there's nothing wrong with having 2 stars on the team

Hey Fidel, I don't tell people they're wrong, I leave that up to you all. It doesn't matter what you all think, it's your OPINION, I have a different one. So why continue to argue with someone who refuses to look at the entire picture. Atleast Murph can admit his someone biased.

thekid, finley will average his 20-21 a game, dirk may get up to 24 next year, but it doesn't matter.
the mavs have to get an inside presence next year, a guy that can play the big men down low. if they dont' get that, then it doesn't matter what dirk or finley does. it will be a second round ousting by san antonio or the lakers.
no one will stop duncan or o'neal, but the mavs have to get someone that can slow them down a bit more

Well disagreement there, that's why the more I think about it, we need to make a move with Bradley or Booth. I'm going to start a new thread about this one.

which part do you disagree with?
the point totals? or the fact that the mavs need an inside presence?
i would love to have both bradley and booth...and an antonio davis like player, but is there enough minutes to go around

Now I get upset the Kid,
that´s just what I was saying. That I like Dirk better and that I might be biased on some points. Also I´ve been saying alot of times that as I understand MSG boards they are to debate opinions. Everyone has different opinions so thats just what its about. Look into the threads, don´t try to make me the bad guy. Also that comment up there was a joke man, see the smile? Hell go into the other threads, I always said we shouldn´t take it personal and we all might be biased in some way or another.

No I don't, and what I said up there was I don't tell people they're wrong either. I said everyone has their opinion but I may disagree with ALOT of people's opinions more so than others will. However on this board, I've had people tell me I'm WRONG, and we're talking opinions. When it's been facts and I've been wrong, I've said so. That's what I'm saying there, I NEVER tell anyone their wrong if they voice their opinion. And I won't.

actually, i enjoy debating with you. you're very strong with your opinions, makes it enjoyable, and you try your hardest to back things up when you post, sometimes with stats, etc... which is cool also

I hope you nutcases aren't yelling at ME... I love Finley, and I've stayed out of the whole Finley vs. Dirk nonsense since I've been here. I only post sane, reasonable, insightful things...

I think the problem was that they came in here after being away for a while and didn´t follow the whole debate. I liked the Finley/Dirk debate with Kid, MFFL, Murph and so on. I think people were showing some real passion there, and other than Lam no one really disrespected each other. I think it´s settled now and we know that Kid likes Fin better and Murph and me like Dirk better and that´s just fine with me.
Hell I like the Mavs as a team, some of them more some less, and also I like it here.
Peace

Personally I think the offense should run through Bradley, with Big #44 touching the ball at least once every possession, ala Garnett.

Hey fidel - I just wanted that I am like Kid in one respect. My favorite player on the team is also Finley. I just feel that Dirk will be better and if he's the #1 option on the team it will make the team better. And even if Dirk becomes the most dominating player in history of the league, Finley WILL STILL be my favorite player.

I´m fine with that. As you know I´m also for Dirk as #1 option, and at least I hope that I not only think so because I like Dirk as a player, I hope that I also have an objective point there, but who knows?
My all time fave will always be Jordan. But I guess that goes for 90% of german NBA fans, cause he was the first we were able to watch on a constant basis over here (though I´ve had glimpses of Bird and Magic before that but that was on AFN- Armed Forces Network).

People will laugh at me, but my two favorite players in the HISTORY of the game are Isiah and Pippen. Yup call me crazy, but I LOVE those guys.

I like Isiah just fine, but I lost all respect for Pippen because he wouldn't reenter a game because the last shot wasn't called for him. Plus Pippen's actions since becoming a Blazer are less than admirable.

Well I can't say I've been the happiest with Pippen either since he's left the Bulls. That not entering the game thing was a real bitch move on his part but I've loved his game for so long. He should retire now because his game was centered around his quickness and since he no longer has that, he's an AVERAGE player right now.

madape, lam0015 was ran off of the board by dj.
i don't think anyone has been finley hating in the arguments,..it's more about dirk continuing to make huge strides and being a top 3-5 player in the nba.
it could definitely happen.

Maybe Dirk's going to work on his passing skills this summer because his mentor is anticipating a lot of double teams when Dirk works down low.
