From ÄOL Poll: France an Important Ally?
The day before the starting of the G-8 meeting this week in Paris, Chirac said the same, that they needn't the US relationship, but later in the meeting (I think yesterday), Bush beat him hard, getting an agreement of heavy support from the group in favor of the US for future steps in the war against terrorism and other issues.

France needs the US more than vice versa. I do think we should keep them as allies, just for the strategic reasons alone. I thought the dumping of French produced items was stupid.
