Default Rick Carlisle: Clippers or Wiz?

Carlisle talked with GM Baylor on Tuesday

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Rick Carlisle, fired Saturday as Pistons coach as the team made room for Larry Brown, interviewed for the Clippers job Tuesday, ESPN.com's Marc Stein has learned.

Carlisle spoke to Los Angeles general manager Elgin Baylor, who called the former Detroit coach to request an interview at the pre-draft camp in Chicago.

Carlisle will also meet with the Wizards in the near future.

The Clippers also have interviewed Mike Dunleavy and interim coach Dennis Johnson.

Carlisle had said recently that he planned to pursue coaching jobs with three teams. The identity of the third team remains unknown.

Carlisle was fired abruptly after guiding Detroit to a pair of 50-win seasons and an appearance in this year's Eastern Conference finals.

The 42-year-old Carlisle was let go with one year and $2 million left on his contract, despite winning two straight division titles and the 2002 NBA Coach of the Year award.

Carlisle, in his first head coaching job, helped turn Detroit from a lottery team into one of the top teams in East.

He led the Pistons to a 100-64 regular-season record and a 12-15 postseason mark. Their season ended May 24 after they were swept by New Jersey in the conference finals.

If I'm Rick. I'm stayin away from both those teams. LAC - You don't know who you'll have as a team. (Who's staying? Who's leaving?)
WAS - Ownership is not loyal are trustworthy. They'll stab you in the back when you're not looking.

I think Rick Carlisle should come in and replace Harris as the Defensive assistant coach.

Dang I was thinking the same thing. If its just about money (for Carlisle) I could see that happening though.

Rick would be utterly stupid to take an assistant job as he has worked so hard to get to head coaching level. He just got started and it would hurt his career to go back down to assistant coach. He would be better off taking the Clippers or Wizards job, I just thought it was funny as mentioning it because I knew someone else would....

What do you think Detroit did? I think if Carlisle brought the wizards to Eastern Conference finals, you wouldn't see washington 'stabbing him in the back'. Of the two Choices so far, I would choose Washington. He gets to stay in the East where it's easier to bring a team out from the bottom of the standings and make them playoff ready. And the ownership will shell out more money than the Clips to retain talent.

I think the Clippers are suffering from the same thing the Mavs did under Perot ownership. No money. Until they loosen the purse strings, no coach will be able to bring them to playoff level. Every year I think they will show vast improvements from the previous year and make the playoffs. They have the talent to do it, but everyone there is so demotivated.

If he waits a bit longer, he can have the Portland job.

I want Nellie back, but I'd kill to get this guy on the coaching staff as the heir apparent, if it were possible.

Rick should join mavs coaching staff and wait for another year to get a better coaching job. Clippers have all the pieces to become a good team but Donald Sterling will not pay to keep the players. Wiz has no hope for next 3 years.

I'm from Washington originally, so I know the Wizards/Bullets franchise pretty well. They, like the Clippers, are one of those teams under the 'curse' of poor management that can turn a roster full of talent into a high-lottery team.

I believe at one point they had what must have been one of the deepest front-courts in recent history: Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Gheorge Mueresan (in his best years, avg. 15/10 I think), and Ben AND Rasheed Wallace on the bench (not sure if they were both there at the same time, but they might have been). They had a pretty good back-court too, and managed to turn it into a couple of lottery teams and first-round exit or two. Pathetic.

These are two pretty bad choices for Carlisle. He may want to take a year off to do broadcasting or something. Although at least the Wizards will not have Wes Unseld, who has been a terrible GM over the years, even though he was the heart and soul of Bullets Basketball.

I can't imagine that someone with the skins that Carlisle has taking EITHER job. Both jobs are for the newbies in the league.
